From Designed Obsolescence to Sustainable Technology Design

In research, working with:

- premature obsolescence of ICT artefacts (most prominently the mobile phone, see SMART project | Mobile Phones to the right); Conference paper at IFIP This Changes Everything, Poznan/Poland 2018

- a review of (historical) design cases as to how sustainability related or similar values and principles have been applied in products or concepts (poster: The Long Tail in the ICT Design Space, 2018)

- 'modularity' as emphasized one of these principles, and its downside when it comes to modularization; Conference paper at PLATE 2019 (Product Lifetimes and the Environment), Berlin/Germany

- Plastics in electronics, 'precious plastics' small-scale collection and recycling to a research prototype; future cooperation with Wecycle and Norwegian Trash; March 18th it's Global Recycling Day!

- proposals for alternative IC technology, so proto-practices (Transition Design): "Single Use goes Circular"-Journal paper at JSR; with product-service-systems (PSS) applied, and both hard and soft matter (operating systems, service design) considered (poster: Borrowed(4)Use Mobile, 2019); business-side (futuring sustainable business models) study = work in progress

- workshops around such proto-practices and desirable futures, incorporating desirable-future technologies and interaction; thanks to the pandemic planned as interview-workshop-tour with proto-typing material packages provided

In the S&D Lab, working with:

- interior/setting up our new, inspiring work environment and vision of the S&D Lab

- contributing to further education within the core topics Creativity/Design and Sustainability (for whole Ifi, or even UiO?)

- a themed library/digital bookshelf in the overlap of Sustainability and Design

- set-up and test the upcoming machinery for the small-scale recycling of  'precious plastics' (in 2021)

In teaching: Course responsible for IN2020 Research Methods in Interaction Design/HCI (Bachelor), autumn 2018, 2019, and 2020.
