Low frequency antenna for rover mounted planetary ground penetrating radar - GPR
A low frequency (small) antenna suitable for planetary rover installation is to be designed, manufactured and tested.
FFI is currently developing the RIMFAX GPR for the NASA Mars 2020 Rover Mission. The lowest frequency for the RIMFAX antenna is 150 MHz. The limiting factor for making a low frequency ultra-wideband antenna is the size of the antenna. The lower frequencies have lower loss when they propagate in the subsurface and the radar can see deeper. It is therefore of considerable interest to use as low frequency as possible. This master project shall study different type of antennas, simulate them and design and build the most promising antenna design. The antenna shall be characterized in terms of matching, antenna gain and radiation pattern. The antenna shall be tested together with the RIMFAX Engineering Field Test Model.
