Instruments:

In our laboratory we have four different instruments:

Bruker maXis II ETD LC-MS:

The instrument is a Q-h-TOP (Quadrupole analyzer, collision cell, Time-of-Flight analyzer). It can be linked with a liquid chromatographic system (Dionex 3000 UHPLC) or a gas chromatograph.

We have ion sources for electrospray ionization (ESI) and chemical ionization at atmospheric pressure (APCI). It is equipped with a probe for direct incision.

    Mass range: m/z 20–40 000.

    Mass resolution: up to 75 000 at m/z= 1222

      Bruker Scion-TQ Premium GC-MS:

This instrument is the work horse of our laboratory. It has Q-q-Q configuration (Quadrupole analyzer, collision cell, quadrupole analyzer). It is linked with a gas chromatograp and is equipped with ion sources for electron impact ionization (EI), and chemical ionization (CI) including a temperature programmable probe for direct insertion.

        Mass range: m/z 1–1200.

            Micromass QTOF 2 W:

Ionization techniques: electrospray ionization (ESI) and chemical ionization at atmospheric pressure (APCI).

Geometry: Q-q-TOF: Time of Flight (TOF) gives high resolution, high mass accuracy and high sensitivity. This instrument has is of the so-called W-type, which means that two reflectrons in sequence an be used for ultimate performance.

The instrument configuration allows for MS-MS experiments. Quadrupole number one (Q1) is used as a mass filter and quadrupole two (q2) is the collision cell. The products from the collions is detected by the TOF.

            Manufaturer: Water (Micromass), Manchester, UK.

The instrument was acquired in 2001

Injection method: Clean samples and reference samples are injected using an infusion pump.

HPLC: The Mass spectometer can be linked to a Waters 2695 HPLC.

            Bruker Apex 47e FT-ICR MS:

Our FT-ICR-massespektrometer is a complete chemical laboratory in its own right.

This high mass resolution instrument was the first of its kind in the Nordic countries. It is equipped with electron impact (EI), chemical ionization (CI), electrospray ionization (ESI), matrix assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) and a special purpose cluster ion source.

            Description of services:

We offer a broad range of services for analysis and characterization of organic and biological substances for internal and external users.

We are able to analyze, characterize and identify organic, organometallic, biological and inorganic compounds—both pure compounds and mixtures using mass spectrometry, including HPLC/MS, GC/MS and MS/MS. We are equipped to determine accurate m/z values. In addition, if time is available, we may assist the customer in determining molecular formula and structure based on the accurate m/z value an ion fragmentation pattern. We also conduct quantitative analysis, provided a suitable protocol and a calibration substance is made available.

            Services:

            • a) Electron impact ionisation (EI) of pure samples
            • b) Chemical ionisation (CI) of pure samples (please indicate reactant gas)
            • c) GC/MS with EI-ionisation of mixtures (please attach gas chromatogram)
            • d) GC/MS with CI-ionisation of mixtures (please attach gas chromatogram and indicate)
            • e) Accurate mass determination by EI (please attach low resolution mass spectrum)
            • f) Accurate mass determination by EI-GC/MS (please attach low resolution mass spectrum and gas chromatogram)
            • g) Electrospray of pure samples or mixtures using ESI/MS or LC-ESI/MS (including APCI).
            • h) Accurate mass determination by ESI or APCI

            IMPORTANT:

            Internal users are prioritized.

Check that the sample is suitable for MS. Is it pure/clean enough? Is it sufficiently volatile, soluble or stable for the technique to be used?

Salts, very polar molecules, and molecules with high molecular weight often give pyrolysis products upon heating in an EI/CI ionization chamber at, but may be suitable for ESI or APCI.

            External users:

We are happy to welcome external customers. External customers should contact the facility manager in order to sign an agreement of use.

The employees at the facility are happy to help you discuss scientific problems and give advice.

            About:

The laboratory is equipped with four mass spectometres, of which two are modern instruments with very high sensitivity and mass accuracy. The instruments are equipped with a range of ionization techniques (EI, CI, ESI, APCI). Most of our samples come from the Section for organic chemistry and Section for catalysis at the Department of Chemistry, and Section for pharmaceutical chemistry at the Department of Pharmacy. In addition, we offer our services to external customers at universities and independent institutes, and private companies.
