Herman Martens Meyer - Wave energy conversion with a cooperative point-absorber array

Herman Martens Meyer is a PhD candidate in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Oslo. Prior to starting his PhD, he completed an integrated Master’s degree in Applied Physics and Mathematics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). For his Master’s thesis, he worked on identifying subsurface turbulence using light reflected from a free surface. His research interests include wave turbulence, breaking waves, and free-surface turbulence.

The oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth, and waves contain terrawatts of untapped power. Despite this, the field of wave energy remains underdeveloped compared to other renewable sources such as solar and wind energy, mainly due to high costs and the challenges of building reliable systems in marine environments. In this talk, I will introduce the concepts of wave energy conversion and present results from a proof-of-concept study of a novel point-absorber array. The experiments, conducted in the new wave tank at the University of Oslo, demonstrate both the potential for the system and key limitations related to the system design and wave interactions. The findings provide insight into future improvement and possible full-scale development.
