Anton Souslov - Odd active solids

Anton Souslov is an Associate Professor in the Theory of Condensed Matter group at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge. He is a theoretical physicist whose research focuses on soft matter, mechanical and optical metamaterials, active matter, topology, and polymer physics. He obtained his B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from Florida State University in 2006 and his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Pennsylvania in 2011. Before joining Cambridge in 2024, he held research and academic positions at Georgia Tech, Leiden University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Bath.

His research explores how the collective behaviour and structure of materials can give rise to unusual physical properties. His work spans active materials, mechanical metamaterials, topological systems, and, more recently, topological photonics and structured optical fibres. His research has been recognised through awards and grants including an EPSRC New Investigator Award and a Royal Society Research Grant. At Cambridge, he continues to investigate how concepts from topology and condensed-matter physics can be used to design novel materials and devices with potentially useful mechanical and optical properties.

I will give a broad introduction to the physics of active solids, which consume energy to allow for actuation and shape change not possible in equilibrium. I will focus on novel dynamical phenomena and design principles for active materials with so-called odd elastic moduli, which are composed of non-reciprocal springs. I will then give a specific example from our recent work on the formation and coarsening of dynamical patterns when odd active solids undergo instabilities [1]. Our results point to the design of novel soft machines at the macroscale, and guide the miniaturization of non-reciprocal metamaterials.
