The main purpose of the presentation is to summarise briefly the state-of-the-art in modelling approaches for colloidal fouling, i.e. the continuous deposition of small solid particles on initially clean surfaces, which is addressed as resulting from the coupling between four elementary phenomena: deposition, resuspension, agglomeration and clogging (i.e. multilayer deposition). Then, the limitations in our current understanding of particulate fouling are discussed and the presentation also outlines areas where further experimental and numerical analysis are needed, especially towards the understanding of other complex deposits.
