Three-dimensional instability of solitary water waves

Three-dimensional (transverse) stability of solitary water waves is investigated on the basis of the Euler set of equations. It is analytically found that solitary water waves are three-dimensionally unstable if the amplitude-to-depth ratio is greater than 0.713. This critical ratio is well below that (=0.781) for the two-dimensional (longitudinal) instability. The results are verified numerically.
