Abstract: The envisioned abelian category of mixed motives over a field with rational coefficients should be Tannakian (given as representations of an affine group scheme in the neutral case). We will discuss unconditional integral results in the stable setting, relying on a universal property -of the representation category of GL_n proved by Iwanari. In the end we will speculate about universal properties of other algebraic groups.
