Title: Variational simulation of quantum systems
Abstract: One of the main applications for which quantum computing is expected to provide an advantage over classical computing is the simulation of the time evolution of quantum systems. However, in the current era of noisy quantum hardware, the circuit complexity is limited by gate error and short coherence time. In this context, the main class of algorithms that is being researched for practical applications are the Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQAs) which implement a classical optimization loop iterating over a variational quantum circuit. By outsourcing part of the computational task to classical hardware, these algorithms are designed to make use of shorter quantum circuits, with the goal of limiting noise in the results. In this presentation I will give an overview of VQAs, then describe in particular the algorithm that was the main focus of my master’s projects – projected-Variational Quantum Dynamics (p-VQD) – as well as the use cases I applied it to (adiabatic evolution of an Ising chain, simulation of a lattice nuclear system) and some of my results for these, both from classical simulations and from executions on quantum hardware.

Title: Non-decomposable positive maps from tensor products
Abstract: Understanding how positivity of maps behaves under tensor products is linked to several open problems in quantum information theory. In my talk, I will present some recent results on how non-decomposable positive maps can arise from tensor products and tensor powers of decomposable maps. The Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism is an indispensable tool in this line of research.
