The current investigation aims to adapt and validate the Teacher Education and Development Study-Instruct observation instrument for assessing teaching quality in new contexts: Norwegian Grade 6 mathematics and science lessons. More specifically, the article examines content validity and reliability in the new contexts using a multi-methods approach, involving the Delphi technique and generalizability theory. Findings suggest that while the core components of the instrument are relevant in the new contexts, specific adaptations are necessary to capture teaching quality in a more nuanced and meaningful way. Based on the findings, specific adaptions are made to the instrument. Finally, recommendations for developing and using the instrument in the new contexts are provided. The current investigation underscores the importance of contextual sensitivity in the assessment of teaching quality.

If students are to acquire deep learning in science, they need to know about the nature of science (NOS), particularly not only the cognitive-epistemic but also the social-institutional aspects of NOS. In this paper, we investigate the content of the Norwegian science curriculum in order to establish how NOS is represented, in particular to the social-institutional aspects of NOS, which have been reported to be underemphasised in science curricula from different parts of the world. We use the Family Resemblance Approach (FRA) to NOS as the theoretical and analytical framework to investigate the science curriculum from Norway where there is a history of emphasising the values human dignity, identity and cultural diversity as well as respect for nature and environmental awareness. The findings show that the dominating aspects of NOS in the science curriculum are scientific practices and social values. The observation about the prominence of social values of science is in sharp contrast to comparable analyses, suggesting a particular orientation to NOS that considers the human element in the Norwegian science curriculum. Implications for science curriculum reform and future studies are discussed.

Scientific practices are introduced in curricula around the world, replacing the more general concept of inquiry. There are many different definitions of scientific practices, and the purpose of this article is to contribute to a common understanding of what scientific practices are and how they can be implemented and assessed in the classroom. We analyzed the Norwegian curriculum LK20 and found that teachers are mainly left on their own in how to interpret, implement and assess scientific practices. To address the lack of support, we selected a set of central scientific practices based on LK20, the research literature and international curricula and described the practices as explicit and close to teaching practice as possible. Implications for use are discussed, together with a call for other researchers to join the discussion.

The purpose of this paper is to accentuate teachers’ voice and examine what teachers consider as useful professional development for promoting 21st century skills as presented in educational reforms. The teachers participated in a professional development program designed to support teachers in bridging the gap between visionary reforms and classroom practice. Over a three-year period, 56 courses were conducted, reaching 1187 teachers. Results from this large-scale qualitative study show that teachers highlighted instructional strategies modelled during the course as supportive together with easy access to teaching resources and increased confidence. Implications for future professional development programs are discussed.

This paper analyses students’ conceptual sense-making of two representations of protein synthesis: animations and static visualizations. Even though several studies have focused on the effect of animations versus static visualizations or support aspects that enable students to effectively benefit from animations, existing research has not yet analysed the activity of students’ shared conceptual sense-making of these two modes of representation. Grounded in sociocultural perspectives, this study addresses this gap by investigating two classes of 10th graders working in the computer-supported Viten learning environment. One class worked on a unit containing animations, and the other on a unit where animations were replaced by static visualizations. Pre- and post-tests were administered to measure possible differences between the classes in their knowledge acquisition. Aiming to explain the quantitative findings, we performed an interaction analysis to scrutinize the interaction trajectory of two dyads, one from each condition, while working on an animation and static visualization of protein synthesis both in class and in conceptual interviews. Our pre- and post-test findings demonstrate that students in the animated condition outperformed students in the static condition. The analysis of a dyad’s interaction indicates that students’ conceptual understanding develops at the juncture of segmentation of animation and text and students’ collaborative conceptual sense-making. We argue that interacting with animations and static visualizations are two different interactional processes, and based on our theoretical grounding, we hypothesise that this difference explains the different learning outcomes in the two conditions. By taking a sociocultural approach, the study provides a deeper understanding of the very activity in settings in which students are introduced to the scientific concepts embedded in animations versus static visualizations. Cognitive theories explaining students’ learning from these two modes of representations dominate the research field. The current study contributes to the field by launching a hypothesis of why animations may be superior to static visualizations in supporting students’ development of conceptual understanding in science. We introduce the collaborative link-making hypothesis, which builds on the conceptualisation of pedagogical link-making introduced by well-known researchers in the field of science education.

This article provides an introduction to what it means to adopt a view of literacy as social practice for science education. This view of literacy builds on the idea that reading and writing are best regarded as situated social practices involving text, not as a set of decontextualised and universally applicable skills. First, we draw on sociocultural perspectives on literacy to show how these perspectives inform our understanding of literacy when the context is science. Second, we use related research literature, mainly concerning the role of text in science education, to present a framework for approaching literacy in science classrooms from a sociocultural perspective. Finally, we discuss how a social view of literacy enables us to consider how literacy occurs in contexts relevant to a transcending science subject for scientific literacy.

Enhancing teachers’ assessment literacy through authentic modelling of multiple assessment forms.
Full text in Research Archive
Show summary
This study explores a multiple summative assessment (MSA) approach with various exams during a one-year professional development program (PDP) in science for secondary teachers. Factors supporting this approach include: providing assessment methods that offer students ample opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and competencies; necessity to challenge traditional summative assessment and establish varied assessment forms, especially in the wake of generative AI; helping students allocate workload over time, and the grading pass/fail might reduce stress. Assessment methods were modelled during the PDP, and teachers were required to conduct and pass the exams to pass the program, thus they were subjected to experience various assessments in an authentic setting. Our research question How may authentic exposure to various summative assessment methods influence teachers’ perspectives on learning and assessment? was investigated based on 37 reflection notes with teachers’ views and experiences of the assessments and 8 individual interviews. Findings indicate that teachers favor alternative assessment methods over traditional ones, linking this to learning outcome, motivation, and opportunities to demonstrate competencies in various ways. Furthermore, the authentic setting contributed to raised awareness of teachers’ assessment practice, especially the importance of explicit learning goals and assessment criteria. Challenges include stress connected to submitting many exams for the students, and the workload for teachers providing feedback and grades. We suggest that implementation of summative assessments needs to be balanced between contextual aspects and how to best cover the content in ways that allow students to demonstrate their competencies.

The authentic setting raised teachers’ awareness of their own assessment practice, especially the importance of explicit learning goals and assessment criteria. Challenges included students’ stress in submitting many exams, and teachers’ workload providing feedback and grades. This suggests that MSA needs to be balanced between contextual aspects and opportunities for students to demonstrate their competencies.
