Starting as a doctoral research fellow in the autumn of 2024, Semya's path to this role highlights her deep commitment to exploring the complexities of the solar atmosphere, positioning her to make impactful contributions to RoCS' research.
With a rich blend of Norwegian and Algerian heritage, Semya's journey encapsulates diverse cultural influences and varied work experiences. Before embarking on her academic career, she spent time traveling and working as a scuba diving instructor, during which she also took some courses at the University of Agder.
Her academic journey then took her to the University of Oslo, where she pursued a bachelor's in physics and astronomy. It was here that she first engaged with RoCS through two summers as a research assistant, fostering her passion for solar physics. For her master's, she delved into radiative transfer and spectral line simulations, laying the groundwork for her current research.
Now, Semya is pursuing a PhD, focusing on simulating the Lyman lines—crucial for understanding the dynamics of the Sun's atmosphere. She is eager to develop new approaches that transcend traditional methodologies, aiming to enhance the diagnostic potential of spectral lines observed by the upcoming EUVST spectrometer onboard the Solar-C satellite.
Innovative research approaches
Semya is keen to explore beyond established methods, stating:
Previous studies relied on simplifying assumptions, but I aim to develop new methods to efficiently integrate all essential physics for synthesizing optically thick line profiles.
Her work promises to broaden the current understanding of solar physics.
Choosing RoCS and embracing opportunities
Her experiences during her master's studies at RoCS left a lasting impression.
RoCS offers a fantastic work environment, and I was thrilled to continue my research journey here
Semya reflects.
Life beyond research
Settling into her role, Semya is pleased with her progress: - It’s been great; I’m learning a lot, she shares, eager to deepen her expertise and hone her academic skills.
Outside of her work, Semya enjoys traveling, reading, drawing, and scuba diving, particularly in warmer climates, blending her love for the arts with her enthusiasm for exploration.
Welcome to the team, Semya!
