Taking the next academic step

- There is a major expertise within the field that I am currently working on and everyone is more than happy to answer my academic questions. Jonas Thoen Faber enjoys being part of the RoCS team.

Jonas started working as a PhD at RoCS in August 2022. Born and raised in Drammen, just outside Oslo, he graduated with a bachelor and a master in astrophysics at the University of Oslo in June last year.

- Where have you studied before and in what field? What are the differences from or similarities to your current project?

- During my masters, I was part of the RoCS group at ITA where I studied the solar chromosphere and transition region using the space-born telescope Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). I used observational data of a coronal hole, where magnetic field lines extend to interplanetary space, to detect features that are more common in active regions. That is, searching for Si IV profiles that deviates from the non-dynamic profile similar to a gaussian line using machine learning techniques.

I will focus on observing the solar atmosphere in my PhD which is similar to what I did in my masters. The difference is that I will study different types of events and use data from additional telescopes to add more information of the observed events. I was looking for UV bursts before and now I will study the energetic behaviour of flares that was successfully observed by multiple telescopes in 2022.

- What are you going to study?

The objective is to analyse two flares that was observed in the chromospheric region of the solar atmosphere by the Swedish 1m Solar Telescope (SST).

My goal is to better understand the physical processes that are associated with flares and draw conclusion based on the observed events.

SST is one of the best solar telescopes in the world and I feel privileged to be able to use this fantastic instrument in my research. IRIS was also missioned on the same region which resulted in extend diagnostics of the flares. In addition, the SDO telescope add information of the corona region of the atmosphere, but also in a larger field of view as it observe in the full solar disk.

- How do you plan to solve the main question?

- My main approach will be to use observations from various instruments. The information provided by multiple instruments allow us to study the event of interest at different heights. This means we are able to better understand the behaviour of such event on a larger scale. Nevertheless, it will also be compared with 1-dimensional simulation of flares and compare it with observations in order to gain additional knowledge of the parameters that builds a flare.

- What brought you to ITA and RoCS?

- I was recommended by my master supervisor Nancy Narang to apply for a PhD positions.

- How can you describe your experience here at ITA so far?

- There is a major expertise within the field that I am currently working on and everyone is more than happy to answer my academic questions. The working environment is great and it is very easy to have a chat with everyone. I really enjoy being a part of ITA/RoCS and are looking forward to the next few years here.

- What do you expect from this experience at ITA?

- I expect to learn a lot more about the subject that is in my very interest and also to develop my academic skills even further.

Fishing trip
Me fishing near Tromsø. The halibut (kveite) weighted 26.45 kg. Fun fact: the halibut was never actually attached to anyones hook. My mom had a mini-cod on her rod and this thing was hungry and followed the cod. At the railing, we saw this monster and quickly grabbed the gaff and managed to get it on board. It was quite an experience. Photo: private

- What do you like to do in your spare time?

  • I really enjoy shorter and longer trips into the woods.
  • Both climbing and bouldering, mostly indoors.
  • Fishing!! This is a hobby that I have enjoyed all my life and there is nothing like getting a monster of a fish on the rod.
  • Hanging out with my family at the cabin during summer and winter.
