The University of Oslo’s part of the project is to include recommendations from the International Virtual Observatory Alliance into the SOLARNET Metadata Recommendations for Solar Observations, and convert three data sets to be compliant with the new recommendations.
About the project
OSCARS is an EU-funded framework aimed at enhancing the accessibility and usability of science data by adhering to the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable). The Federation of Solar Data project (FSD) is funded through OSCARS, spans from 2024 to 2026, and focuses on creating a federation of Solar data, which involves organizing, synthesizing and transforming data from various sources to make them more accessible and interoperable.
Objectives
Key aspects of the FSD project include:
- Federation of Solar Data: The main objective is to bring together diverse datasets from different Solar physics research efforts and institutions, enabling better access and streamlined use of Solar data for research activities. This process involves integrating data from multiple sources into a coherent and easily accessible system.
- International Collaboration: The project involves eight partner institutions, highlighting the collaborative effort across different countries and organizations. These institutions work together to pool their expertise in Solar data management, sharing their resources to achieve the project's goals.
- UiO's Role: The University of Oslo (UiO) participates in the project by integrating recommendations from the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) into the SOLARNET Metadata Recommendations for Solar Observations. These recommendations were written by UiO as part of an earlier EU-funded project, and is gaining traction as a de facto standard in the Solar research community.
- Data Format Conversion: UiO is also responsible for converting three specific data sets to comply with the new metadata recommendations. This task is crucial for ensuring that the data can be efficiently accessed and analyzed across various platforms and by different researchers in the Solar physics community.
Outcomes
Overall, the FSD project is focused on improving the infrastructure for Solar data accessibility, standardization, and usability, advancing research capabilities in Solar physics.
Background
The Federation of Solar Data project stems from the necessity to streamline access to, and use of, Solar data for researchers in the field of Solar physics. Developing standardized methods for organizing, accessing, and using these datasets aims to overcome challenges posed by disparate data formats and sources.

There are eight partner institutions:
- Astronomical Institute of Slovak Academy of Sciences
- Royal Observatory of Belgium
- Instituto Nazionale di Astrofisica
- Instituto Riceche Solari «Aldo e Cece Dacco»
- Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias
- Leibniz-Institut für Sonnenphysik
- Stockholm University
- University of Oslo
Financing
Funded by the EU through the OSCARS program.
