-The best way to survive the Norwegian winter, is by embracing it

The words belong to Danish Amalie Bisgaard Møller. She finds  balance in combining research and activities in the great outdoors.

Name: Amalie Bisgaard Møller

From: Fyn, the third-largest island of Denmark. Lived in Copenhagen before moving to Oslo.

Lives in: Oslo

Working on: Doing an Industrial PhD as part of the research project (REHSYS - IFE) at the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) at Kjeller. IFE is one of the neighbouring research institutes that collaborates with the University of Oslo (UiO)

- Can you tell us a little bit about your background?

-I come from Denmark where I took my bachelor’s degree at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in chemical engineering. I moved to Norway in 2022 and completed my master’s degree in Renewable Energy Systems at the University of Oslo (UiO), Department of Technology Systems. My Master thesis is titled "Modelling of the Thermal and Dynamic Performance of a Small-Scale PEM Water Electrolyser System" (University of Oslo, June, 2024)

-What are your current research tasks?

-I am doing a PhD as part of a research project (REHSYS - IFE) at the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE), where the goal is to optimize industrial scale water electrolysis systems based on wind, photovoltaic (PV), and proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology. My focus is on process modelling and control of PEM water electrolyzer systems.

-And what are you specificially working on these days?

- Right now I am working on developing a PEM water process model. I am also taking a PhD course at The University of South-Eastern Norway.

-Have you attended any conferences yes?

-I have attended  two conference in Oslo so far. These are: Mozees 2024 MoZEES Final Conference | FME MoZEES and The Future of Energy 2025 The Future of Energy is Green and Digital, 9 January 2025 - UiO:Energy and Environment. I plan on attending one conference on water electrolysis: European Fuel Cell Forum 2025 (EFCF) Scope of the Forum : European Fuel Cell Forum or International Conference on Electrolysis 2025 (ICE) ICE 2025 | International Conference on Electrolysis. I also plan on attending The Scandinavian Simulation Society conference 2025 (SIMS) SIMS - Home.

- Any publications and/or presentations on the agenda?

- I have presented one poster at a conference at UiO in January, called "The Future of Energy 2025", but there will be more posters/papers coming up in 2025!

-Can you describe your everyday life with your coworkers at IFE and UiO?

- I spend most of my time at the Department of Technology Systems, UiO, but I also go to IFE sometimes. My main supervisor Øystein Ulleberg is a chief scientist at IFE and is also a professor at UiO. I also collaborate with other hydrogen researchers at IFE and a professor at USN. I really enjoy the everyday life at UiO. There are many other PhDs to talk to and to share experiences with. On Fridays we have circle training in the gym at UiO, which gives the brain a good break.

- What kind of activities do you do on your spare time?

- I like to be active. I run and bike all year around. I like to be in the nature, and in winter I do cross-country skiing. In summer, I enjoy going on hikes and sleeping in my tent. I also have some indoor hobbies that include baking, reading, knitting and sewing. I really like the winters in Oslo because of all the snow, and I believe the best way to survive the winter is by embracing it and putting some spikes on your running shoes and your bike, so that no such thing as bad whether can stop you.
Making sure to eat many waffles and cinnamon buns will also help to survive the winter.

-The main difference between Norwegian and Danish culture, in your opinion?

-I really enjoy living in Norway, and the nature is my favourite. Norwegian and Danish culture is similar in many ways, however Norwegian culture is more centered around outdoor activities, whereas the Danish lifestyle is more urban.

-Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

-I would like to continue the work with modelling and control of processes. I also hope to do more work to mitigate climate change, either in a job or in my free time.

Thank you for joining us, Amalie. And good luck with your future PhD work!
