Conferral summary

Main research findings

As climate change accelerates due to increasing greenhouse gas emissions, transitioning to sustainable energy sources is critical. These sources, like solar and wind, are intermittent, as sunlight and wind aren't constant. Hydrogen offers a promising solution for energy storage due to its transportability, akin to gasoline. However, storing hydrogen poses risks, involving high pressures and low temperatures, compounded by its flammability. Metal hydrides offer a safer alternative, operating near room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Yet, they face issues in stability and storage capacity. This research examines two metal hydrides: one revealing a critical link between structure and hydrogen storage properties; the other, a titanium-iron-based metal hydride known for its initial absorption challenges. It is known that adding zirconium aids the initial absorption, but not why. Here this is explored and while investigations didn't yield definitive conclusions, new insights into what is happening are provided. Furthermore, scaling metal hydride storage from lab to industrial levels is rarely addressed. This study also explores scaling challenges, emphasizing crucial aspects like heat management, hydrogen distribution within the tank, and tank orientation.
