Timeline for the master's degree
Welcome Week
The Welcome Week for all new master's students takes place during week 33, starting with the mandatory orientation meeting. During this week you will get to know your fellow students, the Department of Technology Systems and the University of Oslo. You can read more about the Welcome Week here.
Registering for courses, signing up for exams and paying the semester fee
Deadline for paying the semester fee, registering and signing up for exams is 1 September/1 February.
To keep your right to study you have to pay the semester fee before 1 September for the autumn semester, and 1 February for the spring semester.
You must register every semester, the deadline for registering is the same as the deadline for paying the semester fee. Read the instruction on how to register here. You can get help to sign up for your courses the first term of your studies during the Welcome Week.
Supervisor and master's thesis (August/September)
We recommend that you use your time well in finding a supervisor and thesis topic - postponing this until the deadline means finding a supervisor amidst course hand-ins and exams.
You may have more than one supervisor for your thesis. You can also have supervisors from other departments and from outside the university, however, one of your supervisors must be an supervisor from the Department of Technology Systems.

Study plan must be delivered by 1 December
Study progression
The masters' agreement is a binding agreement between you, the department and your supervisor. It is therefore important that you follow the plan that you set with your supervisor to the best of your ability.
You are required to complete 60 or 90 credits of curriculum during your master's degree, depending on whether you choose a short or a long thesis. You should discuss which courses you should take with your supervisor or your contact person. Many of the programmes at the Department of Technology Systems have recommendations for relevant courses on their websites. You cannot change the courses in your plan without your supervisors approval. If you wish to change your curriculum, fill in the form here.
To progress in the master's programme, you must have a study progression of at least 50%, meaning 30 credits a year.
It is always a good idea to contact your programme coordinator if you believe that you will be unable to complete your programme in time. Your programme coordinator can give you advice and guidance if you are experiencing challenges during your studies.
Submission of the master's thesis
The deadline for submitting your master's thesis in 2026 is 15th May / 15th November for long theses, and 20th May for short theses. The thesis must be submitted through Inspera.
The deadline for submitting your thesis will be registered in StudentWeb after the master's agreement is accepted. The presentation of your thesis and your examination usually occurs approximately 3 weeks after the thesis' submission. It is your main supervisors responsibility to find an external examiner and agree on a time for the exam with you and the examiners.
Grading of the thesis
Your thesis will be graded by an internal and an external examiner, and there will normally be at least three weeks from your submission of the thesis before your final presentation . The oral examination and the thesis are graded separately, but you will only receive one grade for your thesis as a whole.
Master's presentation
Your master's degree is completed by holding a presentation of your thesis and conducting a Q&A with the examination committee. The date for your exam is set in agreement with the student, supervisor and examiners.
The final exam consists of a public presentation of your thesis and an oral examination. The presentation must last around 30 minutes, and you will give an overview of your thesis. The presentation should be at a level which allows master's students in other research groups at the Department of Technology Systems to understand it. The presentation is followed by an examination in the form of a Q&A with the examiners. Your supervisor(s) will also be present. The presentation and the examination have an impact on your final grade.
Information about the time and place of your presentation will be published on the department’s website.
