Formatting your Master's thesis

Formatting and structure

A short master thesis should be approximately 70 (+/- 20) pages.
A long master thesis should be approximately 100 (+/- 20) pages.

A template for front page and ingress can be found here: https://www.mn.uio.no/studier/master/

Regarding the scientific composition of the thesis, this must be discussed with your supervisor(s). You may also ask your study consultant at ITS to look at some examples from previous semesters, for inspiration.

Master thesis with sensitive information

When writing a research paper (e.g. bachelor’s thesis, master’s thesis, etc.) in which you wish to include sensitive information, medical information, or other personal information from individuals, there are a number of requirements you must satisfy in addition to formally securing permission before you can begin work.

If your materials are subject to a concession (i.e., contain personally identifiable data or sensitive information), you must follow the information from SIKT: Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research. Note! If you need to enter into an agreement with the NSD, you are responsible both for doing this and also for informing the NSD when your Master's thesis is completed.

Potential forms:

Restricting access to a thesis
