Success Factors for Multi-Fuel Ships in Norway: Identifying the Bottlenecks in the Maritime Decarbonization Ecosystem

What are the critical success factors for large-scale deployment of multi-fuel ships, and where is the principal bottleneck within the maritime decarbonization ecosystem?

Project Description

The uncertainty surrounding future fuel availability, pricing, regulations, and infrastructure development has increased interest in multi-fuel vessel concepts. Multi-fuel ships offer flexibility to operate on different fuels depending on availability and market conditions. However, realizing this vision requires alignment across the entire maritime value chain.
This project investigates the technical, operational, economic, and regulatory factors affecting deployment of multi-fuel vessels.

Scope of Work

  • Evaluate existing multi-fuel technologies
  • Analyze fuel supply infrastructure readiness.
  • Study investment and operational risks.
  • Investigate stakeholder interactions.
  • Assess regulatory support mechanisms.
  • Identify key deployment bottlenecks.
  • Develop a deployment roadmap

Methodology

  • Ecosystem analysis.
  • Stakeholder mapping.
  • Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA).
  • Interview studies.Scenario modelling.
  • Risk and uncertainty analysis.

Expected Outcome

  • Identification of major deployment barriers.
  • Prioritized success factors.
  • Stakeholder coordination framework.
  • Recommendations for industry and policymakers.
  • Roadmap for large-scale adoption.

This project can be either 30 or 60 credits.
