This master thesis explores the development of programmable logic controller (PLC) simulation scenarios using open-source simulators within a virtualized environment. The work involves designing and implementing simulation setups in a virtual machine (VM) to replicate industrial automation processes. A key focus of the thesis will be the integration of cybersecurity considerations, including the identification of potential vulnerabilities, secure configuration practices, and evaluation of threat scenarios. The outcome will provide a practical framework for studying PLC behavior, testing automation logic, and assessing cybersecurity risks in a controlled and cost-effective environment.
•Explore potential available simulations and identify the most appropriate for the scope of this thesis.
•Develop domain specific scenario/s including core components such as PLC and industrial communication protocols.
•Develop a simulation environment/s that will describe the aforementioned scenarios.
•Explore cybersecurity aspects within the simulated environments.
