Security on a small satellite system

This master thesis will be conducted in collaboration with Forsvarets Forskningsinstitutt (FFI) and CENSSS. CENSSS is a research center (SFI) at Department of Technology Systems (ITS) at UiO, Kjeller. This center is currently in the process of building, testing, completing and launching a real small satellite (CubeSat) into space.

The master student will contribute to this work, by an analysis of and possible implementation of a crypto- and/or radio-unit on the CubeSat. The work is outlined in the slide below.

In addition to this work, the student might also extend the work by doing an extensive analysis of threat vectors to a complete system of a satellite (or a satellite swarm), including surrounding infrastructures (e.g. the ground station, supply chains, critical infrastructures supported by the satellite, etc.).

The satellite works in a harsh environment, that is not easily accessable if it is compromised. This puts additional requirements compared to a system implemented on earth. For example, key management is also an area that requires further analysis.

This master thesis can be adapted to 30 or 60 credits.
