Mission

My work aims to advance statistical science through teaching at all university levels, through the development and application of new approaches to data analysis, and through collaborations both within statistics and across disciplines.

Research interests

I am interested in modelling randomness and quantifying uncertainty in natural processes, with a particular focus on spatial and space-time modelling and Bayesian and hierarchical frameworks. Methodologically, my work spans statistics and machine learning, including the design and application of proper scoring rules for evaluating probabilistic forecasts and for use in model estimation.

A key application area for my work is the environmental sciences, especially weather, climate, and hydrology.

Biography

Thordis L. Thorarinsdottir is a professor of statistics and data science at the University of Oslo. She joined the University of Oslo in March 2023, after serving as a chief research scientist and research leader for climate and environment at the Norwegian Computing Center in Oslo. She received her PhD in mathematical statistics from Aarhus University in Denmark in 2006.

Her research focuses on developing stochastic models and methods for the environmental sciences, drawing on both statistical and machine learning models. A central theme in her work is uncertainty quantification and probabilistic prediction, including the development of proper scoring rules for forecast evaluation and their use in model estimation.

Thordis currently serves as deputy head and research leader of the Mathematics Department, and she is a joint editor of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series C (Applied Statistics).
