Using a construction by Li and Wu, I will give examples of degenerations of Hilbert schemes of points, with good geometrical properties, induced by degenerations of the underlying variety. Applied to K3 surface degenerations, this gives a class of examples of degenerate hyperkähler manifolds. In this talk I will put some emphasis on understanding the combinatorial structure of the degenerate fibre. Based on joint work with Halle and Hulek.
