Regular restart of computers

By central decree from IT security computers at the department need to be restarted regularly.

You may receive an automated email stating that a given machine is due to be restarted. The email will typically look something like this:

Subject: Important: Scheduled system reboot for machinename.uio.no

Dear Your Full Name,

Due to security regulations, we are required to periodically restart machines.
Our records indicate that machinename.uio.no has been running for over 200 days.

We kindly request that you log out of the system at your earliest convenience.
Once all users have logged out, the machine will automatically reboot during the
next nightly maintenance window.

For more information, including how to log out if you are away, please see
https://www.mn.uio.no/math/english/services/it/help/regular-reboots-of-machines.html

If you have any questions, please reply to this email or visit us on the 7th floor.

Logging out

The easiest way to resolve this is to log out of the machine as you leave for the day.

I am away or otherwise not in my office

Use ssh login.math.uio.no to enter the UiO network and from there ssh to the name of your computer: ssh machinename.uio.no.

The terminal command loginctl allows you to remotely control your login sessions to computers. You can use it like first to find the session ID of your login:

$ loginctl list-sessions
SESSION UID USER SEAT TTY STATE IDLE SINCE
      2 3962 terjekv seat0 tty2  active no
    374    0 root          pts/1 active no

Here the session ID is 2, and we can then kill it:

$ loginctl kill-session 2
