Scheduled downtime, Saturday the 18th of January 2020

On Saturday the 18th of January 2020, linux office computers will be reinstalled with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.

Last fall Red Hat Enterprise Linux released a major upgrade to their Linux environment. This environment has been in testing at the department for a few months now and the time has come to migrate to the new release. This will require a reinstallation of all office computers at the department. As such you will have ensure you are logged out from your computer by Saturday the 18th of January

The migration will update the majority to the software installed on the computers as well provide a substantial upgrade to the modules offering scientific software. One big positive change that follows from this upgrade is a much improved support of video conferencing solutions (Skype and Zoom) and file sharing (Dropbox). Please note that Dropbox requires local configuration, so you will have to let us know if you wish to use it on your office computer.

The computational servers (both CPU and GPU oriented) will be upgraded at a later time. This will be announced to the users of the resources in question.

If you encounter anything unexpected or missing after the upgrade, please email us at drift@math.uio.no.
