Björn Holger Heyn

Björn Heyn has been a researcher at both CEED and PHAB, and now he returned in August 2026 with his own project “DEFORM – DEFlection Of the core-mantle boundary Reorganizes Mantle flow”.

DEFORM is funded for 4 years by the Norwegian Research Council, and aims to implement and investigate a deformable lower boundary in numerical models of mantle convection.

Björn is a computational geodynamicist with background in seismology who is working on mantle convection problems from the core to the surface. His special focus is on mantle plumes from their origin in the deep Earth to their volcanic expression at the surface. At PHAB, his goal is to investigate how deformations of the core-mantle boundary can affect the lateral flow in the lower mantle, and how this reflects in large-scale convection patterns, plume generation and the distribution of anomalies such as the Large Low Shear Velocity Provinces. In addition, he will look at possible connections between mantle convection and variations in the Earth’s magnetic field.
