Hannah Sanderson

Hannah Sanderson joined PHAB as a postdoctoral fellow in November 2025. At PHAB, Hannah will study the dynamics of metal-silicate separation in magma oceans and explore its effects on mantle redox evolution and magnetic field generation.

Hannah is a planetary scientist with a particular interest in fluid dynamics and magnetic field generation. Before joining PHAB, Hannah was a PhD student in Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford working on planetesimal magnetic field generation. Her research used numerical models and meteorite paleomagnetism to provide insight into the differentiation and thermal histories of rocky bodies in the early Solar System and the evolution of the protoplanetary disk. At PHAB, she will be focusing on the dynamics of metal-silicate separation in magma oceans following iron disproportionation and iron sulfide exsolution. This separation influences the mantle and surface redox states and conditions for dynamo generation; all of which influence a planet’s habitability. Alongside her research, Hannah teaches for The Carpentries a non-profit organisation that teaches foundational coding and data science skills to researchers worldwide.
