"Magnetic Fields in Cosmology"

Conferral summary

Denne oppgaven utforsker nye anvendelser for bayesianske analyseteknikker innenfor feltet kosmologi.

Main research findings:

This work is done in the context of a particular field in cosmology, which studies the earliest observable light in the Universe, called the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The analysis of data from different CMB experiments is a difficult task in itself, comprising many steps and requiring a very high level of accuracy. In this thesis we have developed new statistical methods to apply in various parts of the CMB data analysis. We are using methods from Bayesian statistics, that is, statistical methods where the model we have chosen is driven by the observational data itself. This allows for a more accurate estimation of both instrumental effects particular to a given experiment and astrophysical effects, such as cosmic dust emission and CMB itself. In this work we are also showing the power of the joint analysis of different experiments, where it becomes easier to distinguish and estimate what part of the data can be attributed to the astrophysical phenomena and what to the instrumental systematics. These methods can be applied to future CMB experiments, enhancing our analysis not only by enhancing the quality of instruments, but also by building upon all the preexisting knowledge in the field.
