Title: The shielding of the scalar fifth-force and possible cosmological detection signatures

Abstract: Scalar fields that couples to matter, leading to a fifth-force in nature, is a generic property of theories with extra dimensions. Local gravity constrains are today so tight that it forces any such coupling to be unnaturally small unless there exist some mechanism for shielding the scalar fifth-force. We will in this Thursday-seminar discuss different mechanisms that produces exactly this screening effect and some of the unique local and cosmological signatures that can be used to detect these fields. The main focus will be on the Symmetron model (hep-th/1001.4525).
