Procedure for fieldwork at MN

This procedure supplements UiO’s "Procedure for HSE in Fieldwork".

Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that fieldwork and field courses at IBV are conducted safely and in accordance with the relevant regulations.

The procedure shall ensure that a risk assessment — previously the Field Card for the Person Responsible for Fieldwork — is prepared for the fieldwork or field course and made available to participants. It shall also ensure that everyone undertaking fieldwork completes a field card.

Scope

This procedure applies to both staff and students at MN who undertake fieldwork or field courses.

Responsibilities

  • For projects, the project manager is automatically the person responsible for fieldwork.
  • The course coordinator is responsible for teaching-based fieldwork.
  • The person responsible for fieldwork is responsible for ensuring that the fieldwork is carried out in accordance with this procedure.
  • The person responsible for fieldwork may delegate tasks relating to the fieldwork.

Procedure

All fieldwork must be risk-assessed in accordance with UiO’s procedure for risk assessment (Norwegian).

Person responsible for fieldwork

Where necessary, the person responsible for fieldwork must obtain advice from suitably qualified specialist staff and ensure that fieldwork participants make the necessary preparations.

The person responsible for fieldwork must complete the Risk assessment of fieldwork, IBV/NHM-form (nettskjema)(Norwegian). If the fieldwork extends over a longer period and involves several trips, for example monthly water sampling over two years, it is sufficient to complete this form once per year.

The person responsible for fieldwork must also complete the Field Card for Field Participants (nettskjema) if they are taking part in the fieldwork themselves.

For more extensive fieldwork, the section’s HSE coordinator/HSE field coordinator or the Head of Administration must be informed.

Field participants

Field participants must complete the Field Card for Field Participants (nettskjema) each time they undertake fieldwork. See the information in the field card for further details.

Animal experiments

The capture and marking of wild animals for scientific purposes must be approved. Read more about this on the Norwegian Food Safety Authority’s website (Norwegian).

Archiving

Risk assessments for fieldwork are stored as responses in the online form. Field cards are automatically deleted after 12 months.
