The special waste storage rooms serve as temporary storage areas for hazardous waste before it is transported to the goods reception area for disposal. This arrangement will apply from 2027; an interim solution is currently being developed. The rooms are equipped with a fire-resistant chemical storage cabinet, shelving and a trolley for transport. Users must use the waste storage room allocated to their area; see the table below. Each waste storage room will be linked to the relevant laboratory access areas in the Life Sciences Building.
- Infectious waste may be temporarily stored in the special waste storage rooms before being taken to the goods reception area for disposal.
- Chemical waste must be temporarily stored in the chemical storage cabinet in the special waste storage room. All chemical waste stored in these rooms must be clearly labelled with its contents, the room number from which the waste originates, and the contact person. Use the waste labels available under the Guidelines for Chemical Waste.
- Unopened chemicals in their original packaging intended for disposal may be temporarily stored in the chemical storage cabinet in the special waste storage room. The container must be labelled with the room number from which it originates.
Ensure that aqueous waste is stored on a different shelf from flammable waste, and that chemicals in their original packaging are stored on a separate shelf from waste. Incompatible chemicals must not be stored on the same shelf.
Users are responsible for keeping the special waste storage rooms tidy and for transporting the waste to the goods reception area for disposal. This will apply from 2027; an interim solution is currently being developed. The special waste storage rooms are inspected regularly by the person responsible for health, safety and environment (HSE).
