Academic interests
As a senior lecturer at KURT, the Centre for Teaching and Learning in Science, I work with both teaching, outreach and research. Here are my main points of interest:
- How to use generative artificial intelligence in science education: The recent surge in large language models (llms) has opened new ways of teaching and learning. So far, however, only students who already master a subject use llms in a productive way. Students must learn both how to use llms productively and how to learn from them. Therefore, we have launched several projects to address this issue. In collaboration with the center for computing in science education (CCSE), we have explored various ways of scaffolding exercises using llms, the results of which will be published in the fall of 2024. I have also conducted interviews with several professors regarding their use and attitude towards llms. While working on these, I am continuosly updating my resource page llmteaching.com, where you can find more information on how to teach and learn using llms.
- Podcasts on teaching and science outreach: I host two podcasts: Real læring, which is a podcast funded by KURT where we address issues related to teaching science in higher education and Under kappa, my private popular science podcast where I talk about the physics and biology of super heroes.
- Computational teaching and research on topological defects: During my PhD, I wrote a lot of computer code simulating different types of field theories containing topological defects - from Bose-Einstein condensates to crystalline materials. I have collected these materials together with several tutorials and comprehensive documentation on comfitlib.com. The software is peer-reviewed in the Journal of Open Source software, and the long-term goal is to implement the library in courses on field theory, such as quantum mechanics.
