Potential flow theory has been applied to study the shape and speed of an infinitely long bubble in vertical tubes. In particular, the combined effects of surface tension and externally forced liquid motion are examined. An analytical formula for the bubble velocity in stagnant liquid is proposed, and shown to be in very good agreement with experimental data for all values of surface tension. The predicted changes in bubble shape have to a large extent been confirmed through comparisons with photographic evidence for a wide range of parameters.
