Title: "Fluid mechanics in the world around us"

Main research findings

In physics, we are often interested in describing materials with many interacting particles. When the number of particles becomes very large the details of the interactions between single particles become less important, and it is often enough to know the systems' symmetries to describe many aspects of its dynamics. In this thesis, we take advantage of this to study two fluids consisting of very different particles, namely microswimmers and bosons, to study defects in active fluids and Bose-Einstein condensates. Using a common mathematical framework, we get insight into the creation mechanism for the defects as a gradual process where the core of the defect is localized. When the defect is created it will move around in the fluids. This motion is, among other things, dependent on the fluid flow. Even though the defects are localized in points, their effect extends throughout the system creating flows that affect the motion of other defects and, in the active fluids, themself. In the active fluids, we study the motion of the defects due to the flow field they have created themself, and how they interact with a faraway neighbor
