Title:  “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Accelerator Physics”

Main research findings

Particle colliders are important instruments in understanding the smallest constitutes of the universe. Accelerating particles and colliding them at high energies allow us to study the processes of the early universe. Plasma accelerators, compared to conventional ones, provide a more efficient way to accelerate particles. While electron acceleration in plasmas has been studied extensively, accelerating other particles using plasma has not yet reached the same level. In this thesis, feasibility studies for accelerating muons in plasmas are quantitatively performed for the first time. The results show that muon acceleration using plasma is practical within a given set of parameter space, restricted by the maximum muon energy and bunch length. Furthermore, Accelerating high-quality positrons in plasmas has proved challenging in the past. Relevant schemes on positron acceleration in plasmas are reviewed, and a framework is established to compare these schemes. A universal ‘limit’ due to plasma-electron motion within the accelerated positron bunch is found in most schemes. Fortunately, such a limit can be overcome or avoided. In conclusion, plasma accelerators have an important role to play in the market for building next-generation colliders.
