Title: "An Introduction to the Physics of Superconductors"
Main research findings
The findings in the dissertation demonstrate that using compressed hydrogen gas can be a viable alternative to fossil fuels for high-speed ferries in Norway, although it takes up considerable space and is not the most efficient option. Converting hydrogen gas to liquid form offers compactness but demands significant energy input, adding extra costs. However, the very low boiling point of liquid hydrogen (-253 °C) creates an opportunity to implement superconductors, known for their high efficiency at very low temperatures. Combining liquid hydrogen with superconductors could decrease energy consumption, thus saving costs and making it an attractive option for the maritime industry. Currently, the high production cost of liquid hydrogen makes compressed gas a more economical choice. However, it is predicted that liquid hydrogen costs will decrease over time, making this combined approach more competitive. Importantly, regardless of the hydrogen form used (compressed gas or liquid), its consumption only emits water and heat, making it a carbon-free option.
