Title: "The Carnot Process and Heat Pumps: Limits of Thermal Efficiency"

Main research findings

During the next long shutdown of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, ALICE will upgrade its detectors to improve its measurement capabilities before the next round of data collection. One key upgrade is the inclusion of a new high-granularity forward calorimeter (FoCal). This calorimeter will be installed in the forward region, an area not yet covered by current detectors, allowing for new studies and measurements in this important region of the experiment.

This thesis presents simulated performance studies of the electromagnetic part of FoCal (FoCal-E), looking at different prototype designs. The simulation of the original prototype design was characterised and validated against experimental data before other detector setups were tested to study how they affected the detector’s linearity and resolution, and to assess the placement of the high-granularity layers. The studies showed that the original prototype design meets its performance requirements and that the simulated results agreed with the experimental data within acceptable limits. Furthermore, no significant improvements were found in the alternative designs. Consequently, the original prototype design remains the preferred option.
