Novel radiation phenomena in solids: from collective disorder-induced ordering to engineering of artificial atoms.

By Prof. Andrej Kuznetsov, Department of Physics, University of Oslo.

Abstract:

Modification of materials with ion beams is often highlighted by a glorious example of the transistor-size downscaling, to a large extend enabled by ion implantation. Nevertheless, even remaining technologically important, the physics behind it thought already being well understood. However, recently, we came across several novel observations, including the disorder-induced ordering (PRL 128, 15704(2022)) and the ion-beam-assisted fabrication of artificial atoms (Nature Electronics, 3, 738(2020)). As such, radiation phenomena in solids remain an interesting field of physics, capable to contribute towards resolving future technological challenges.

Biography:

Andrej Kuznetsov – professor at the Department of Physics of the University of Oslo in Norway - was awarded with a Ph.D. degree in physics from the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1992 and accomplished his habilitation in solid state electronics in 2000 at the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. The focus is to understand novel semiconductors, searching for new fundamental phenomena and enabling new device functionalities.
