A brief introduction to aircraft flight

It is time to fasten your seat belt and get ready for a brief introduction to aircraft flight!

By airline captain Stig Patey, Norwegian Air Shuttle

Aviation provides several challenges and opportunities which we will explore in this session. We will explore the history of aerodynamics, some of the key concepts and we’ll get first-hand knowledge of the operational aspects in an airline from a pilot’s perspective.

Topics include aerodynamic forces, aircraft stability, maneuverability, the jet engine and aircraft performance.

The presentation takes us from takeoff and all the way to supersonic flight.

Stig Patey is an airline captain on the Boeing 737 and a former student at our Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

He started his flying career at the age of 15, flying gliders before he got the opportunity to become a commercial pilot in SAS on the Fokker 50 in 2001.

He joined Norwegian on the Boeing 737 in 2006. He has also been an instructor for pilot students teaching principles of flight.
