The Birkeland Lecture 2014

Every autumn the University of Oslo organizes the Birkeland Lecture which gathers many scientists involved in space research. This year the lecture will be held on Thursday 25th of September at the The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. Dr. Jean Lilensten will give a talk on "A new window on our Space environment: The polarization of the auroral emissions. A French – Norwegian discovery." You can read the abstract of this exciting talk here. And under this link you will find the location of the venue. Dr. Jean Lilensten is from the Institut de Planétologie et d’Astrophysique de Grenoble, CNRS, Université Joseph Fourier, France. 

The Birkeland Lecture has been held since 1987 and it is named after Kristian Birkeland, a Norwegian scientists who was the pioneer in studies of aurora borealis. His research also led to important discoveries in chemistry. He was nominated for the Nobel prize seven times. We can today see him on the 200 NOK notes with the northern lights in his background.
