Early in December, it became known that four INTPART-projects at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UiO, receive funding from NFR. One of the lucky ones is Adriano Mazzini, a researcher at CEED / Department of Geosciences.
European Geophysical Union: EGU has recently announced who gets awards and medals for 2019. One of the lucky ones is Professor of geomatics Andreas Max Kääb, Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo who is awarded the Louis Agassiz Medal for 2019.
The Department of Geosciences has several externally financed projects, in 2017 external research support contributed 50% of the department's economy. On Monday the 27th of August there was a start-up meeting for one of the newest projects - Volcanic Eruptions and their Impacts on Climate, Environment, and Viking Society in 500-1250 CE (VIKINGS). A freshly graduated PhD in geomatics from the University of Oslo, Bas Altena, have been granted a postdoc grant from the European Space Agency's (ESA) Living Planet Fellowship program. With this fellowship he will explore new ways to exploit satellite data from the Copernicus program in combination with other satellites to help understand fast changes in the cryosphere.

For many decades geoscientists have struggled to explain exactly how and why this feature occurred around 50 Million years ago. A new study from CEED, sheds light on this long-standing geological controversy – A massive collision at the edge of the Pacific Ocean was the culprit.
The German researcher Sarah Incel has been granted one postdoc grant from the Feodor Lynen Research Fellowship programme in the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation. Incel will be affiliated to the Section for Physics of Geological Processes (GEO-PGP) at Dept. of Geosciences.

Professor Emeritus Knut Bjørlykke at the Dept. of Geosciences could recently proudly show the textbook Petroleum Geoscience in Chinese. First time published in 2010, revised and expanded in a second edition in 2015 and in august 2017 the book was transelated to Chinese.
Department of Geosciences participates in the FME centre SUCCESS which does research on CO2 storage. The SUCCESS centre was in 2016 entering into the final two years and is now in the phase of concluding its work.
Sigurd Kjoberg and Syahreza Saidina Angkasa graduated from the master’s programme at Dept. of Geosciences in 2016. They are now first authors of articles in the scientific journal Interpretation, articles which are based on their master theses.
Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo receives RokDoc software for $30 million from Ikon Science (UK). The software will be used in teaching in two advanced courses in petroleum geophysics.
Aerial photos taken by drones are of great help for documenting changes at the ground for researchers at Department of Geosciences. Photos of the thawing of permafrost get attention, and in the May edition of the journal Nature Climate Change is one of their photos of decreasing permafrost in North of Norway chosen as a cover photo.

It will be built a new classroom in connection with Auditorium 1 in the Geology building, Blindern. Auditorium 1-2 will therefore be closed from 18 April to tentatively Sept. 15, 2017. Also Visjonariet will be closed in certain periods.
The Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics was opened in March 2013, and is now in 2017 turned four SFF-year-old. CEED is a Center of Excellence (CEO) at University of Oslo, hosted by the Department of Geosciences.

Several interested members of the public and researchers working with natural hazards and earthquakes were in the audience on 13. December to follow the seminar on Risk and management of earthquakes. CEED-professor Torgeir B. Andersen gave a lecture about why Italy are affected by a large number of earthquakes and discussed several aspects concerning the geology of earthquakes.

Professor of meteorology Jón Egill Kristjánsson in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo passed away in a tragic accident in Jotunheimen National Park on the 14th of August, 2016, at age 55.
CEED - Centre of Earth Evolution and Dynamics at Department of gescoences/UIO recently launched a brand new website for the Ivar Giæver Geomagnetic Laboratory. This is a National Norwegian research laboratory and research infrastructure for geomagnetism, supported by CEED and the Norwegian Research Council of Norway.
Today it was announced who will get the foremost awards for 2016 from University of Oslo. Gratifying was that Professor of geodynamics Trond Helge Torsvik from Department of Geosciences and The Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED) - is awarded the University of Oslo's research prize.
