GEOHYD Seminar: Permafrost change in the southern Yukon: ground temperatures and repeat ERT

Welcome to the GEOHYD Lunch Seminar Wednesday 22nd of November @ 12:15 in Aud. 2, Geology building, or via video link using Zoom. The seminar is held by Antoni Lewkowicz (University of Ottawa).

Seminar by Antoni Lewkowicz (Dept of Geography, University of Ottawa):

Permafrost change in the southern Yukon: ground temperatures and repeat ERT

ABSTRACT: Long-term monitoring of permafrost is ongoing at 11 boreal forest sites spread along a 1200 km transect in the southern Yukon and northwest British Columbia, Canada. Mean annual ground temperatures (MAGT) measured to the southeast of Whitehorse were all above -0.25°C and apparent warming was less than 0.05°C between 2010 and 2023. Monitored sites between Whitehorse and the US border had MAGTs from -0.4°C to -1.6°C and except for one, warmed by 0.1-0.2°C. These small changes in temperature were accompanied by much larger percentage changes in electrical resistivity measured along arrays at the same sites. This demonstrates the value of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) when unfrozen moisture contents increase as permafrost thaws internally. The recent installation of a prototype Automatic ERT monitoring array at one of the sites, making daily measurements and transmitting them by satellite, should increase understanding of the timing of ground freezing and thawing and its relationship to short-term meteorological events.

The talk is in Aud 2 in the Geology Building. It is also possible to follow at Zoom.

Video link to the lecture will be sent to the mailing lists alle@geo and geohyd-info@geo. If you want to subscribe to the geohyd-info@geo list send an email to Anita.
