GEOHYD Lunch Seminar: Kongsvegen, the surge.

Welcome to the GEOHYD Lunch Seminar Friday 22th of September @ 12:15 in Kursalen U37 (Etasje -1), Geology building, or via video link using Zoom. The seminar is held by PiM Lefeuvre (Norwegian Polar Institute).

Seminar by PiM Lefeuvre (Norwegian Polar Institute):

Kongsvegen, the surge.

Abstract: We present more than 17 years of quiescence phase and surge initiation collected as part of the Norwegian Polar Institute's mandate and its glacier monitoring program in the Kongsfjord region, Svalbard. High precision GNSS stations were deployed to complement this unique continuous dataset when very early acceleration signs were observed at Kongsvegen glacier. We investigate the characteristic of the quiescence phase at Kongsvegen followed by seasonal but sustained surface acceleration and evidence of mass redistribution downstream from the accumulation area. We discuss the role of the subglacial drainage system and sediment deformation on basal friction through the classical surge theories.

The auditorium where the talk will take place in the Geology Building will be announced prior to the event. It is also possible to follow at Zoom.

Video link to the lecture will be sent to the mailing lists alle@geo and geohyd-info@geo. If you want to subscribe to the geohyd-info@geo list send an email to Anita.
