Evaluating the effectiveness of propylene glycol and ethanol as antifreeze: an environmentally friendly alternative

Abstract:

Accurately measuring solid precipitation in regions where snow can cover up to 40% of the land area in the northern hemisphere remains a challenging task. Although it may seem straightforward to measure solid precipitation by installing a simple collector, achieving accurate measurements is difficult. Traditional precipitation gauges rely on an antifreeze solution to melt snow stored in the collector and provide solid precipitation measurements. However, using antifreeze agents like glycolmeth can lead to various health and environmental issues. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of propylene glycol and ethanol as environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional antifreeze agents like glycometh. It will also assess the toxicity and biodegradability of the antifreeze solutions to evaluate their potential impact on the environment.

The talk is in Aud 2 in the Geology Building. It is also possible to follow at Zoom.

Video link to the lecture will be sent to the mailing lists alle@geo and geohyd-info@geo. If you want to subscribe to the geohyd-info@geo list send an email to Anita.
