GEOHYD Lunch Seminar: Greenhouse gas fluxes from a cultivated peatland , northern Norway–implications for climate-friendly management

Welcome to our GEOHYD Lunch Seminar Friday 26th of May @ 12:15 in Aud. 2, Geology building, or via video link using Zoom. The seminar is held by Junbin Zhao (NIBIO).

Seminar by  Junbin Zhao (NIBIO):

Greenhouse gas fluxes from a cultivated peatland, northern Norway–implications for climate-friendly management

Abstract:

Peatlands are ecosystems with great soil carbon (C) stocks, which represent one-third of the global soil organic C pool. Due to the need for human development, large areas of peatlands have been drained for, e.g., agricultural and forestry purposes. Drainage of peatlands significantly changes the ecosystem hydrology, which facilitates the release of stored C in the peat soil into the atmosphere and turns peatlands into hot spots for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Various management practices have been implemented to use drained peatlands to enable biomass production while reducing GHG emissions, including restoration, cultivation, etc.. However, these mitigation measures are contentious and their effects on peatland GHG balance are largely unknown. Here I will show some results from the MYR project where we investigated productivity and GHG balance in response to peatland cultivation under different fertilization and hydrological scenarios and carried out an experiment on a drained peatland, under grass cultivation in Svanhovd, northern Norway.

The talk is in Aud 2 in the Geology Building. It is also possible to follow at Zoom.

Video link to the lecture will be sent to the mailing lists alle@geo and geohyd-info@geo. If you want to subscribe to the geohyd-info@geo list send an email to Anita.
