GEOHYD Lunch Seminar: Snow metamorphism challenges traditional interpretation of isotopologues in polar snow

Welcome to our GEOHYD Lunch Seminar Friday 28th of April @ 12:15 in Aud. 2, Geology building, or via video link using Zoom. The seminar is held by Michael Stephen Town, UiB.

Seminar by Michael Stephen Town, University of Bergen:

Snow metamorphism challenges traditional interpretation of isotopologues in polar snow

Abstract:

In this talk, I will review the traditional interpretation of isotopologues in polar snow. I will present recent evidence that challenges some traditional paleo-proxy interpretation, and yet also clarifies processes behind earlier successful proxy interpretations. Central to our current efforts are observations and modeling of isotopologues in near-surface snow at the EastGRIP ice core site in the Northeast Greenland National Park. I will explore the implications of our efforts at EastGRIP in terms of reconstructions of past surface temperature, moisture source and transport histories, and Greenland ice sheet elevations. I will suggest ways forward, but make no promises!

About Presenter:

Mike's climate research efforts have historically focused on polar regions. He is currently part of the SNOWISO project at University of Bergen working to improve stable water isotope climate interpretation on different time scales. He is an educator with over a decade of experience in classrooms ranging from grade 6 to master's level. His classroom focus is in developing equitable teaching methodologies where educators teach like scientists (i.e. learn from data about their students) and students learn real-world skills by solving real-world problems.

The talk is in Aud 2 in the Geology Building. It is also possible to follow at Zoom.

Video link to the lecture will be sent to the mailing lists alle@geo and geohyd-info@geo. If you want to subscribe to the geohyd-info@geo list send an email to Anita.
