GEOHYD Seminar: Vegetation control on ground temperatures in Mongolia

Welcome to the GEOHYD Lunch Seminar Friday 8th of December @ 12:15 in Aud. 1, Geology building, or via video link using Zoom. The seminar is held by Robin Zweigel (UiO).

Seminar by Robin Zweigel (Dept of Geosciences, University of Oslo):

Vegetation control on ground temperatures in Mongolia

Abstract: Mongolia spans large gradients in climate and ecosystems, from the Gobi Desert in the south to the Taiga in the north. The southern limits of both the Eurasian permafrost and boreal forest traverse the country and are largely co-located. This is also the case on more local scales, where north-facing slopes feature both forest and permafrost, whereas south-facing slopes are covered by steppe vegetation and are mostly permafrost free. In my PhD, I use field observations and numerical modelling to understanding these relationships between vegetation, local terrain and permafrost. I will show how ground temperature signals below forests and steppe vegetation change in response to natural and anthropogenic disturbances such as logging, insect outbreaks, and intense grazing. Further, I will present the vegetation module that I have integrated in the CryoGrid community model, as well as simulations of the thermal regime associated with the different ecosystem and terrain configurations found in Mongolia. Finally, you should expect pretty pictures from our field excursions.

The talk is in Aud 1 in the Geology Building. It is also possible to follow at Zoom.

Video link to the lecture will be sent to the mailing lists alle@geo and geohyd-info@geo. If you want to subscribe to the geohyd-info@geo list send an email to Anita.
