GeoHyd Seminar: The glacier contribution to 20th century sea-level rise

Welcome to GeoHyd Lunch Seminar Monday September 23.

Title: The glacier contribution to 20th century sea-level rise

Speaker: Paul Leclercq (IMAU)

ABSTRACT:
In recent years major progress has been made in the attempts to close the 20th century sea-level budget. Developments in the estimates of the glacier contribution to sea-level rise played an important role in bridging the gap between observed and reconstructed sea-level change. Since the mid-nineties, the estimates of the glacier contribution increased by a factor 2 to 3. This is largely due to newly available global data sets of glaciers and glacier changes, such as the Randolph Glacier Inventory and the compilation of global mass balances. However, large uncertainties and disagreement between different methods remain. I will present an estimate that is based on observations of glacier mass balance and length changes. I will discuss the problems in this approach and ongoing work that attempts to improve the results.
