  Large parts of the Arctic, including Svalbard, have experienced recurrent episodes of uplift and erosion over the last 15–20 million years, coinciding with localized magmatism and seafloor spreading. This has left sparse onshore stratigraphic records of the Miocene period, limiting our understanding of the tectono-sedimentary and paleo-landscape evolution across this vast region. The volcanic Seidfjellet Formation in northwestern Spitsbergen thus provides a rare e onshore Miocene record. To determine emplacement mechanisms, volcanic architecture, and the pre-volcanic paleoenvironment, we combined detailed field-based facies analysis with digital outcrop models, thin-section petrography, and palynology. We document 10–20 basaltic lava flows, totaling ~400 m in cumulative thickness, now exposed at 600–1350 m elevation. The lava sequence rests on a gently undulating Devonian peneplane that locally is incised by several-hundred-meters-wide, up to 150-m-deep depressions interpreted as paleo-valleys. These valleys likely formed by stream rejuvenation associated with Miocene peneplane uplift. At valley bases we report previously unrecognized pockets of unconsolidated sediment, evidence of pre-volcanic sedimentation. Valley margins are locally draped by volcaniclastic deposits that contain in-situ charcoal-lined tree molds, indicating forested margins before eruption. The main valley fills are hyaloclastite deposits up to 150 m thick, arranged in steeply dipping forests that record southward progradation of a lava-fed delta after base-level rise and drowning of the valleys. Palynological data indicate a conifer-dominated wetland prior to lava emplacement, while the dinocyst assemblages appear partly reworked and are consistent with a Late Oligocene–Early Miocene signal but more likely reflect a Late Miocene age. This study provides the first systematic description of the Seidfjellet Formation volcanic facies and architecture, constrains its spatial extent, and, through its pre-volcanic sedimentary records, offers new paleoenvironmental reconstructions.   The Woodfjorden area in northwestern Svalbard hosts the world's northernmost onshore thermal springs, extinct Quaternary volcanoes (the Bockfjorden Volcanic Complex), late Miocene lava flows (the Seidfjellet Formation) that overlie a Devonian sedimentary basin, and a long‐lived regional fault zone. To contribute to a better understanding of subsurface fluid flow in this volcanic region, we conducted a 3D magnetotelluric (MT) survey at 12 sites, combined with water and gas sampling at the thermal spring clusters (Trollkjeldene and Jotunkjeldene). While the MT survey has a limited aperture due to the remoteness of the region and complex logistics, the identified structural features put several constraints on the evolution of this poorly studied hydrothermal system. The electrically conductive zones (1–10 m), under Trollkjeldene and the Halvdanpiggen volcanic center, are interpreted as signatures of deep hydrothermal fluids or mineralized zones; the resistive anomalies (1–10 km) at 1–4 km depth under the Sverrefjllet volcano indicate buried magmatic or basement rocks. Stable isotope data indicate both meteoric and crustal components for thermal waters. Carbon and noble gas isotope ratios support a mixed gas source involving crustal, atmospheric, and mantle components. Helium isotope ratios suggest a mantle‐derived fraction of 6%–8%. These findings suggest extinct magmatic activity and ongoing hydrothermal circulation, likely prolonged due to fluid compartmentalization at depth by low‐permeability magmatic or metamorphic rocks.

  A strong earthquake sequence in Storfjorden, south of Svalbard, was initiated by an Mw 6.1 event on 2008 February 21. Earthquake distribution and fault plane solutions indicate that seismic activity is controlled by unmapped NE-SW striking oblique-normal faults, contrasting with the major N-S oriented faults mapped onshore Svalbard. We present a geophysical model derived from an ocean bottom seismometer profile crossing the seismogenic zone to identify structures in the crust and uppermost mantle that potentially control the earthquake source mechanism. Traveltime forward modelling using ray tracing, combined with traveltime tomography and gravity-magnetic modelling, reveal distinct crustal domains across the earthquake region. Crystalline crustal P-wave velocities range from 6.1 to 6.7 km s−1 at the Moho depth in the eastern section. The western profile section exhibits a higher Vp velocity lower crust (6.6–7.0 km s−1) with Vp/Vs ratios of 1.75–1.8 and high density (∼3100 kg m−3). Basement depth reaches 8 km in the west, forming a sedimentary basin, and shallows eastward. The Moho remains relatively flat at 29–32 km depth throughout the profile. The N–S oriented Caledonian suture, identified from deep seismic and potential field data, traverses the Storfjorden earthquake zone. The lithological contacts within the suture zone, inferred from the new OBS data, may facilitate seismic failure oblique to the N–S oriented structure, following the regional stress field.

  Continental breakup at the North Svalbard margin and the northern Barents Sea during the Paleogene led to the opening of the oceanic Eurasia Basin. However, the mechanisms behind this rift-to-drift evolution remain unclear. Here, we present seven crustal transects (CT1–7) integrating 2D forward modelling of potential field data and constrained by structural interpretation of multichannel seismic reflection profiles. These transects extend from the continental regions of North Svalbard to the oceanic domain in southwest Eurasia Basin. The Yermak Plateau comprises two juxtaposed tectono-magmatic blocks: the Northeast Yermak Plateau, linked to pre- or early Eurekan settings, and the Southwest Yermak Plateau, formed by shearing and oblique extension along the West Svalbard margin. Broadly, the North Svalbard margin is divided into three segments: (1) Northwest Spitsbergen-Southwest Yermak Plateau, (2) Northeast Spitsbergen-Northwest Kvitøya, and (3) Northeast Kvitøya-North Barents. Segmentation follows inherited north-northwest trending weak zones, guiding Paleogene multi-phase oblique rifting and formation of the Sophia Basin, underlain by thinned, high-density metamorphic crust. The results indicate a rift-shear breakup mode with exhumation of continental lower crust and/or serpentinized subcontinental mantle blocks within the continent-ocean transition (COT) that precedes seafloor spreading which started at ca. 53 Ma during magnetic chron C24. The continental breakup processes that led to margin segmentation reflect the interplay between inherited basement fabrics and plate opening directions of the Eurasia Basin region.

  Geology is omnipresent in Svalbard, defining among other parameters the location of all major settlements. The SVALGEOL chapter provides an overview of the geology of Svalbard, and how it influences local and global society. We briefly describe the history of geological exploration and mapping of Svalbard, before outlining the various data sets geoscientists use in their work. We then focus on two key aspects of geology: the study of “deep-time” (i.e., rocks older than 2.58 million years; the pre-Quaternary period) and the study of “deep-Earth” (i.e., integration of data from Earth’s surface to the interior). By investigating the Earth System at the scale of millions to billions of years, geologists can decipher how the global climate has varied through time. Furthermore, studying different proxies allows us to investigate the processes linking the geosphere with the biosphere (e.g., evolution of life, recovery following mass extinctions). By using field and various geophysical data, geologists can understand the properties of the Earth from its surface to its core, and the processes causing them. Furthermore, by coupling deep, shallow and surface observations with a time component, geoscientists can characterise the underlying processes that also influence society (e.g., natural gas emissions, permafrost development, geothermal potential, earthquakes)

  The North Atlantic region is a complex geodynamic setting that comprises multiple continental blocks, sedimentary basins, mid-ocean ridge systems and prominent hotspots. Recent geophysical surveys of the near-surface have enhanced our understanding of crustal elements and the shallow lithosphere. However, our knowledge of the deep lithospheric structure and the physical state and dynamics of the upper mantle is still limited. Here, we exploit the combined sensitivity of surface-wave data, geoid anomalies, absolute topography and surface heat flow to obtain full thermochemical models of the region from the surface down to 350 km. We jointly invert these data sets using a simulation-based, multi-observable probabilistic framework. We validate our results with independent thermobarometric and chemical information from mantle xenoliths and test the effects of using different seismic models on the inversion results. Our model reveals an intricate sublithospheric flow system, driven by the interaction of deep upwellings with the highly irregular lithospheric structure. We corroborate that the main thermal anomaly in the sublithospheric mantle shows a tilted geometry, moving toward Greenland with depth. We reveal that this large-scale anomaly transition into a more complex pattern once it reaches depths of 150 km beneath the North Atlantic. Small-scale downwellings originate from the margins of continental domains, resulting in a complex circulation pattern that limits the radial spread of the deep upwellings and preferentially focuses them within regions of thin lithosphere along a N–S direction. Distinct compositional anomalies in the Greenland lithosphere delineate the North Atlantic Craton, the Nagssugtoqidian mobile belt, and the covered remnants of the Disko Craton. In continental Europe, the East European Craton shows clear indications of depletion in incompatible elements, with the Kola-Karelian cratonic region showing the highest levels of depletion. Our model serves as a base to make interpretations on the enigmatic paleotectonic history of the North-Atlantic region.

  The Eurasian Arctic Rifted Margin (EARM) spans a poorly studied transition region between the Eurasian continental shelf and the deep-water Nansen Basin. It is a conjugate margin to the Lomonosov Ridge, as both domains were united before the opening of the oceanic Eurasia Basin. The EARM is considered as a Composite Tectono-Sedimentary Element (CTSE) consisting of two individual tectono-sedimentary elements (TSEs): (1) an undefined group of poorly known pre-rift Mesozoic and Paleozoic sedimentary successions; and (2) Late Cretaceous–Paleocene synrift strata. The latter are bounded by a c. 56 Ma break-up unconformity and are overlain by the Eurasia Basin prograded margin TSE, which is not included in EARM. In the absence of drilled wells, we utilize multichannel seismic reflection (MCS) data for seismic stratigraphic correlations with nearby, better-explored, areas. The EARM CTSE is subdivided into three along-strike segments (from west to east): Svalbard–Barents Sea, the North Kara Sea and the Taimyr–Laptev Sea. Across-strike, the EARM CTSE is composed of a proximal zone of stretched crust characterized by normal faulting and a relatively narrow distal transition zone that may contain unroofed serpentinized mantle. The lack of drilled wells makes it challenging to evaluate the petroleum potential of the CTSE, although some indications of a working petroleum system presence exist.

  The Lomonosov Ridge (LR) is a sliver of continental crust, a microcontinent that stretches across the Arctic Ocean and separates the Mesozoic Amerasia Basin from the Cenozoic Eurasia Basin. The LR is thought to have been separated from the northern Barents Sea–Kara Sea passive continental margin by continental rifting at about 56–53 Ma and the subsequent formation of the oceanic crust in the Eurasia Basin. Following the nomenclature of this volume, the sedimentary succession of the LR and nearby area forms a composite tectono-sedimentary element containing an assemblage of the following main tectono-sedimentary elements (TSEs): (1) an undefined group of pre-rift TSEs mostly composed of Mesozoic and poorly known Paleozoic successions; (2) the Cretaceous–Paleocene synrift TSE; and (3) the Eocene–Holocene post-rift TSE. The age of the LR's folded and metamorphosed basement can be inferred based on correlations to basement units of the northern Eurasian passive continental margin, which may include a variety of geological structures formed during Timanian, Caledonian, late Paleozoic and Mesozoic orogenic events. The pre-rift TSE includes the oldest and most poorly known offshore sedimentary succession in the Arctic region. The lithostratigraphic units of these basins were mainly characterized from a handful samples collected at the seafloor and by correlation with better known stratigraphy of the conjugate continental margin. The synrift TSE of Cretaceous–Paleocene age has been defined based on seismic data and samples of sedimentary rocks recovered during the Arctic Coring Expedition (ACEX), as well as from seismic facies correlation between the LR and the Podvodnikov–Makarov, Laptev and East Siberian Sea basins. The post-rift Cenozoic sedimentary record was documented by the ACEX well in the central part of the LR.

  The Carpathian belt is one of Europe's major metallogenic provinces, where magmatic ore mineralization is associated with the past subduction environment. The upper crust is mapped for the first time in the Northeast Carpathian Volcanic Arc using magnetotelluric data inversion. The obtained 3-D electrical resistivity model is interpreted in conjunction with geological information and magnetic anomaly data. The model illustrates the deep magmatic plumbing system including kilometer-scale plutonic bodies at a depth of 2–7 km. The model implies that the transport of magma and fluids in the uppermost crust was controlled by pre-existing faults and décollement horizons. Present ore mineralization, mined since historical times, can be attributed to an electrically conductive conduit that is mapped from the surface to a depth of about 30 km. It is suggested that this conduit connected a shallow magmatic chamber to a deep source region in the southeast during late Miocene time. An observed northwest deflection of the deep magmatic conduit at a depth of more than 10 km may explain the spatial gap in the distribution of the Miocene volcanic activity along the Eastern Carpathians.

  Intraplate volcanism has occurred for the last 35 million years within Northeast Atlantic and Arctic margins, including the western Barents Sea, Svalbard, and northern Greenland. Earlier studies have suggested that some of this volcanism might be sourced from nearby mid-ocean ridges. However, legacy data does not reveal correlations between the sporadic volcanism, despite comparable setting, ages, and compositions of basalts across the area. Here, we utilize a compilation of geophysical data to document late Cenozoic intraplate volcanism affecting the northeastern Yermak Plateau and southwestern Eurasia Basin located north of Svalbard. The identified seabed and subsurface features include volcanic (Mound-A) and hydrothermal vent systems (Tayrona Vent) formed approximately 10 and 2.6 million years ago, respectively. These intraplate volcanic products are coincident in age and origin with observed hydrothermal systems on Svalbard and Northeast Atlantic. We propose that these magmatic features are the result of intraplate volcanism associated with seismic and thermal anomalies in the mantle beneath northern Svalbard.

  The Eurasia Basin formed by continental breakup and separation of the Lomonosov Ridge from the northern Barents-Kara shelves at about 54-56 Ma. It was a restricted oceanic basin since its formation until the Miocene, when extensive water circulation between the North Atlantic and Arctic commenced through the Fram Strait gateway. The opening of the oceanic gateway had large impact on paleoceanography and paleoclimate, which evolved from an Eocene greenhouse to a Neogene icehouse associated with northern hemisphere glaciations. The Eocene to present sedimentary fill of the Eurasia Basin was mainly sourced from surrounding shelf areas in the Barents, Kara and Laptev seas, which experienced widespread Cenozoic uplift and erosion during several phases. The stratigraphy of the Eurasia Basin is poorly constrained due to lack of boreholes penetrating the basin fill.   The Woodfjorden area of northern Spitsbergen (NW Svalbard) offers access to the world’s northernmost onshore thermal springs, extinct Pleistocene alkali basaltic volcanoes and Miocene flood basalts including extensive hyaloclastites. In July 2023, we undertook a 14-day international multi-disciplinary geoscientific expedition to Woodfjorden-Bockfjorden to investigate the Cenozoic geological evolution of the area. The expedition objectives spanned a wide range of scientific topics from sampling of fluids and gas in the thermal springs to constraining the lithosphere by acquiring magnetotelluric data and sampling volcanic rocks.   Geologically, the Arctic is one of the least-explored regions of Earth. Obtaining data in the high Arctic is logistically, economically, and environmentally expensive, but the township of Longyearbyen (population of 2617 as of 2024) at 78° N represents a relatively easily accessible gateway to Arctic geology and is home to The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS). These unique factors provide a foundation from which to teach and explore Arctic geology via the classroom, the laboratory, and the field. UNIS was founded in 1993 as the Norwegian “field university”, offering field-based courses in Arctic geology, geophysics, biology, and technology to students from Norway and abroad. In this contribution, we present one of the educational components of the international collaboration project NOR-R-AM (a Norwegian-Russian-North American collaboration in Arctic research and collaboration, titled Changes at the Top of the World through Volcanism and Plate Tectonics) which ran from 2017 to 2024. One of the key deliverables of NOR-R-AM was a new graduate (Master's and PhD-level) course called Arctic Tectonics and Volcanism that we have established and taught annually at UNIS since 2018 and detail herein. The course's main objective is to teach the complex geological evolution of the Arctic from the Devonian period (∼ 420 million years ago, Ma) to the present day through integrating multi-scale datasets and a broad range of geoscientific disciplines. We outline the course itself before presenting student perspectives based on both an anonymous questionnaire (n=27) and in-depth perceptions of four selected students. The course, with an annual intake of up to 20 MSc and PhD students, is held over a 6-week period, typically in spring or autumn. The course comprises modules on field and polar safety, Svalbard/Barents Sea geology, wider Arctic geology, plate tectonics, mantle dynamics, geo- and thermochronology, and geochemistry of igneous systems. A field component, which in some years included an overnight expedition, provides an opportunity to appreciate Arctic geology and gather field observations and data. Digital outcrop models, photospheres, and tectonic plate reconstructions provide complementary state-of-the-art data visualization tools in the classroom and facilitate efficient fieldwork through pre-fieldwork preparation and post-fieldwork quantitative analyses. The course assessment is centred around an individual research project that is presented orally and in a short and impactful Geology journal-style article. Considering the complex subject and the diversity of students' backgrounds and level of geological knowledge before the course, the student experiences during this course demonstrate that the multi-disciplinary, multi-lecturer field-and-classroom teaching is efficient and increases their motivation to explore Arctic science.

  We address the problem of statistical simulation of a scalar real Gaussian random field inside the unit 3D ball. Two different methods are studied: (i) the method based on the known homogeneous isotropic power spectrum developed by Meschede and Romanowicz [M. Meschede and B. Romanowicz, Non-stationary spherical random media and their effect on long-period mantle waves, Geophys. J. Int. 203 2015, 1605–1625] and (ii) the method based on known radial and angular covariance functions suggested in this work. The first approach allows the extension of the simulation technique to the inhomogeneous or anisotropic case. However, the disadvantage of this approach is the lack of accurate statistical characterization of the results. The accuracy of considered methods is illustrated by numerical tests, including a comparison of the estimated and analytical covariance functions. These methods can be used in many applications in geophysics, geodynamics, or planetary science where the objective is to construct spatial realizations of 3D random fields based on a statistical analysis of observations collected on the sphere or within a spherical region.

  During International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 392, three sites were drilled on the Agulhas Plateau and one site was drilled in the Transkei Basin in the Southwest Indian Ocean. This region was positioned at paleolatitudes of ~53°–61°S during the Late Cretaceous (van Hinsbergen et al., 2015) (100–66 Ma) and within the new and evolving gateway between the South Atlantic, Southern Ocean, and southern Indian Ocean basins. Recovery of basement rocks and sedimentary sequences from the Agulhas Plateau sites and a thick sedimentary sequence in the Transkei Basin provides a wealth of new data to (1) determine the nature and origin of the Agulhas Plateau; (2) significantly advance the understanding of how Cretaceous temperatures, ocean circulation, and sedimentation patterns evolved as CO2 levels rose and fell and the breakup of Gondwana progressed; (3) document long-term paleoceanographic variability through the Late Cretaceous and Paleogene; and (4) investigate geochemical interactions between igneous rocks, sediments, and pore waters through the life cycle of a large igneous province (LIP). Importantly, postcruise analysis of Expedition 392 drill cores will allow testing of competing hypotheses concerning Agulhas Plateau LIP formation and the role of deep ocean circulation changes through southern gateways in controlling Late Cretaceous–early Paleogene climate evolution.

  We explore the mantle density structure of the northeast Atlantic region using constrained linear inversion of the satellite gravity gradient data based on statistical prior information and assuming a Gaussian model. The uncertainty of the residual gravity gradient signal is characterized by a covariance matrix obtained using geostatistical analysis of controlled-source seismic data. The forward modeling of the gravity gradients in the 3D reference crustal model is performed using a global spherical harmonics analysis. We estimate the model covariance function in the radial and angular directions using a variogram method. We compute volumetric gravity gradient kernels for a spherical shell covering the northeast Atlantic region down to the mantle transition zone (410 km depth). The solution of the linear inverse problem in the form of the mean density model and the posterior covariance matrix follows a least squares approach. The results indicate that on average the seismic velocity variation is proportional to the density variation in the northeast Atlantic region. However, a noticeable mismatch or anti-correlation exists in some areas, such as the Greenland-Iceland-Faroe ridge and southwestern Norway. The predicted low-density anomalies at depths of 100–150 km underneath the northeast Atlantic Ocean are correlated with the distribution of Cenozoic submarine volcanoes and seamount-like features of the seafloor.

  SUMMARY The microseismic events can often be characterized by a complex non-double couple source mechanism. Recent laboratory studies recording the acoustic emission during rock deformation help connecting the components of the seismic moment tensor with the failure process. In this complementary contribution, we offer a mathematical model which can further clarify these connections. We derive the seismic moment tensor based on classical continuum mechanics and plasticity theory. The moment tensor density can be represented by the product of elastic stiffness tensor and the plastic strain tensor. This representation of seismic sources has several useful properties: (i) it accounts for incipient faulting as a microseismicity source mechanism, (ii) it does not require a pre-defined fracture geometry, (iii) it accounts for both shear and volumetric source mechanisms, (iv) it is valid for general heterogeneous and anisotropic rocks and (v) it is consistent with elasto-plastic geomechanical simulators. We illustrate the new approach using 2-D numerical examples of seismicity associated with cylindrical openings, analogous to wellbore, tunnel or fluid-rich conduit and provide a simple analytic expression of the moment density tensor. We compare our simulation results with previously published data from laboratory and field experiments. We consider four special cases corresponding to ‘dry’ elastically homogeneous and elastically heterogeneous isotropic rocks, ‘dry’ transversely isotropic rocks and ‘wet’ isotropic rocks. The model highlights theoretical links between stress state, geomechanical parameters and conventional representations of the moment tensor such as Hudson source type parameters.

  Late Cretaceous‐Cenozoic contractional structures are widespread in the Barents Sea. While the exact dating of the deformation is unclear, it can only be inferred that the contraction is younger than the early Cretaceous. One likely contractional mechanism is related to Greenland Plate kinematics at Paleogene times. We use a thin sheet finite element modeling approach to compute deformation within the Barents Sea in response to the Greenland‐Eurasia relative motions during the Paleogene. The analytical solution for the 3‐D folding of sediments above basement faults is used to assess possibilities for folding. Two existing Greenland Plate kinematic models, differing slightly in the timing, magnitude, and direction of motion, are tested. Results show that the Greenland Plate's general northward motion promotes growing anticlines in the entire Barents Sea shelf. Our numerical models suggest that the fan‐shaped pattern of cylindrical anticlines in the Barents Sea can be associated with the Eurekan deformation concurrent to the initial rifting and early seafloor spreading in the northeast Atlantic. The main contraction phase in the SW Barents Sea coincides with the timing of continental breakup, whereas the peak of deformation predicted for the NW Barents Sea occurred at later times. Svalbard has experienced a prolonged period of compressional deformation. We conclude that Paleogene Greenland Plate kinematics are a likely candidate to explain contractional structures in the Barents Sea

  We present an efficient implementation of the method for sampling spatial realisations of a 3-D random fields with given power spectrum. The method allows for a multi-scale resolution and approaches well for parallel implementations, overcoming the physical limitation of computer memory when dealing with large 3-D problems. We implement the random field generator to execute on graphical processing units (GPU) using the CUDA C programming language. We compare the memory footprint and the wall-time of our implementation to FFT-based solutions. We illustrate the efficiency of the proposed numerical method using examples of an acoustic scattering problem which can be encountered both in controlled-source and earthquake seismology. In particular, we apply our method to study the scattering of seismic waves in 3-D anisotropic random media with a particular focus on P-wave coda observations and seismic monitoring of hydrocarbon reservoirs.

  The continuation of the Caledonides into the Barents Sea has long been a subject of discussion, and two major orientations of the Caledonian deformation fronts have been suggested: NNW-SSE striking and NE-SW striking. A regional NW-SE oriented ocean bottom seismic profile across the western Barents Sea was acquired in 2014. In this paper we map the crust and upper mantle structure along this profile in order to discriminate between different interpretations of Caledonian structural trends and orientation of rift basins in the western Barents Sea. Modeling of P-wave travel times has been done using a ray-tracing method, and combined with gravity modeling. The results show high P-wave velocities (4 km/s) close to the seafloor, as well as localized sub-horizontal high velocity zones (6.0 km/s and 6.9 km/s) at shallow depths which are interpreted as magmatic sills. Refractions from the top of the crystalline basement together with reflections from the Moho give basement velocities from 6.0 km/s at the top to 6.7 km/s at the base of the crust. P-wave travel time modeling of the OBS profile indicate an eastwards increase in velocities from 6.4 km/s to 6.7 km/s at the base of the crystalline crust, and the western part of the profile is characterized by a higher seismic reflectivity than the eastern part. This change in seismic character is consistent with observations from vintage reflection seismic data and is interpreted as a Caledonian suture extending through the Barents Sea, separating Barentsia and Baltica. Local deepening of Moho (from 27 km to 33 km depth) creates “root structures” that can be linked to the Caledonian compressional deformation or a suture zone imprinted in the lower crust. Our model supports a separate NE-SW Caledonian trend extending into the central Barents Sea, branching off from the northerly trending Svalbard Caledonides, implying the existence of Barentsia as an independent microcontinent between Laurentia and Baltica.

  This paper considers the lithospheric structure and evolution of the wider Barents–Kara Sea region based on the compilation and integration of geophysical and geological data. Regional transects are constructed at both crustal and lithospheric scales based on the available data and a regional three-dimensional model. The transects, which extend onshore and into the deep oceanic basins, are used to link deep and shallow structures and processes, as well as to link offshore and onshore areas. The study area has been affected by numerous orogenic events in the Precambrian– Cambrian (Timanian), Silurian–Devonian (Caledonian), latest Devonian–earliest Carboniferous (Ellesmerian–Svalbardian), Carboniferous–Permian (Uralian), Late Triassic (Taimyr, Pai Khoi and Novaya Zemlya) and Palaeogene (Spitsbergen -Eurekan). It has also been affected by at least three episodes of regional-scale magmatism, the so-called large igneous provinces: the Siberian Traps (Permian–Triassic transition), the High Arctic Large Igneous Province (Early Cretaceous) and the North Atlantic (Paleocene–Eocene transition). Additional magmatic events occurred in parts of the study area in Devonian and Late Cretaceous times. Within this geological framework, we integrate basin development with regional tectonic events and summarize the stages in basin evolution. We further discuss the timing, causes and implications of basin evolution. Fault activity is related to regional stress regimes and the reactivation of pre-existing basement structures. Regional uplift/subsidence events are discussed in a source-to-sink context and are related to their regional tectonic and palaeogeographical settings.

  The seismic oceanography method is based on extracting and stacking the low-frequency acoustic energy scattered by the ocean heterogeneity. However, a good understanding on how this acoustic wavefield is affected by physical processes in the ocean is still lacking. In this work an acoustic waveform modeling and inversion method is developed and applied to both synthetic and real data. In the synthetic example, the temperature field is simulated as a homogeneous Gaussian isotropic random field with the Kolmogorov–Obukhov spectrum superimposed on a background stratified ocean structure. The presented full waveform inversion method is based on the ray-Born approximation. The synthetic seismograms computed using the ray-Born scattering method closely match the seismograms produced with a more computationally expensive finite-difference method. The efficient solution to the inverse problem is provided by the multiscale nonlinear inversion approach that is specifically stable with respect to noise. Full waveform inversion tests are performed using both the stationary and time-dependent sound speed models. These tests show that the method provides a reliable reconstruction of both the spatial sound speed variation and the theoretical spectrum due to fully developed turbulence. Finally, the inversion approach is applied to real seismic reflection data to determine the heterogeneous sound speed structure at the west Barents Sea continental margin in the northeast Atlantic. The obtained model illustrates in more detail the processes of diapycnal mixing near the continental slope.

  We perform an integrated analysis of magnetic anomalies, multichannel seismic and wide-angle seismic data across an Early Cretaceous continental large igneous province in the northern Barents Sea region. Our data show that the high-frequency and high-amplitude magnetic anomalies in this region are spatially correlated with dykes and sills observed onshore. The dykes are grouped into two conjugate swarms striking oblique to the northern Barents Sea passive margin in the regions of eastern Svalbard and Franz Josef Land, respectively. The multichannel seismic data east of Svalbard and south of Franz Josef Land indicate the presence of sills at different stratigraphic levels. The most abundant population of sills is observed in the Triassic successions of the East Barents Sea Basin. We observe near-vertical seismic column-like anomalies that cut across the entire sedimentary cover. We interpret these structures as magmatic feeder channels or dykes. In addition, the compressional seismic velocity model locally indicates near-vertical, positive finger-shaped velocity anomalies (10–15 km wide) that extend to mid-crustal depths (15–20 km) and possibly deeper. The crustal structure does not include magmatic underplating and shows no regional crustal thinning, suggesting a localized (dyking, channelized flow) rather than a pervasive mode of magma emplacement. We suggest that most of the crustal extension was taken up by brittle–plastic dilatation in shear bands. We interpret the geometry of dykes in the horizontal plane in terms of the palaeo-stress regime using a model of a thick elastoplastic plate containing a circular hole (at the plume location) and subject to combined pure shear and pressure loads. The geometry of dykes in the northern Barents Sea and Arctic Canada can be predicted by the pattern of dilatant plastic shear bands obtained in our numerical experiments assuming boundary conditions consistent with a combination of extension in the Amerasia Basin sub-parallel to the northern Barents Sea margin and a mild compression nearly orthogonal to the margin. The approach has implications for palaeo-stress analysis using the geometry of dyke swarms. © 2017 Geological Society

  Our main focus is on examining how brittle deformation and the resulting dynamic evolution of permeability influence pathways of localized fluid migration. These processes are well documented in both sedimentary reservoirs and magmatic systems. Key applications include induced seismicity, fault reactivation and cap-rock integrity in siliciclastic reservoirs, as well as dike and sill emplacement with associated seismicity in magmatic environments. In our models, we consider fluid flow within a deformable porous medium. The governing equations are derived from conservation of mass and momentum for two phases. The first phase represents the solid skeleton, which deforms in a poro-(visco-)elasto-plastic fashion. The second phase describes one or more low-viscosity fluids (water, CO₂, melt) percolating through the solid skeleton according to Darcy’s law. A key process of interest is brittle failure of the solid matrix triggered by elevated fluid pressures (hydrofracturing, fault reactivation, diking). The coupled system of equations is solved numerically using the pseudo-transient method, which is well suited to highly nonlinear problems, as it enables solving global equations while simultaneously handling nonlinearities. Additionally, the method involves many inexpensive local operations, making it well adapted for GPU implementation. We show that our newly developed numerical codes can capture critical end-member cases of fluid-induced fracturing (mode-I and mode-II). Beyond this, we extract components of seismic moment tensors from poro-elasto-plastic geomechanical simulations. This integrated approach links geomechanical parameters with seismological observations, offering a promising pathway toward a deeper understanding of progressive deformation processes driven by fluid migration.

  A key effort in geodynamics is to understand the interplay between localized porous fluid flow and rock deformation. Our primary focus is exploring the effect of brittle deformation and consequent dynamic permeability evolution on localized fluid migration pathways. Such processes are well documented in sedimentary reservoirs and in magmatic systems. The most critical applications include induced seismicity, fault reactivation and associated integrity of cap rocks in siliciclastic reservoirs and dike and sill emplacement with associated seismicity in magmatic systems. In our models we consider fluid flow in a deformable porous medium. The governing equations are derived from the conservation of mass and momentum in two phases. One phase represents the solid skeleton, which deforms in a poro-(visco-)elasto-plastic manner. The second phase represents low viscosity fluid (water, CH, melt), percolating through the solid skeleton, that is described by Darcy’s law. A special process we will investigate is brittle failure of the matrix due to high fluid pressure (hydro-fracturing, fault reactivation, diking). The system of equations is solved numerically, using the pseudo transient method, that is well suited to solve highly non-linear problems, as solving the global equations and iterating the non-linearities can be done at the same time. Moreover, the algorithm requires large number of local and cheap operations which is ideal for GPU implementation. We demonstrate that our newly developed numerical codes can resolve important end-member cases of fluid induced fracturing (mode-1 and mode-2). Furthermore, we extract components of seismic moment tensors from the poro-elasto- plastic geomechanical numerical simulation. This approach bridges geomechanical parameters with seismological observables, providing a promising avenue for a more comprehensive understanding of the progressive deformation associated with fluid migration.
