  The Norwegian Sea oceanic basins and prograded margins have developed since NE Atlantic break-up in the earliest Eocene. Significant amounts of sediments were fed to the regionally subsiding and widening Norwegian Sea during the Cenozoic as a result of several phases of uplift and erosion of the bounding shelves and their hinterland. Despite an overall passive-margin evolution, the area experienced tectonic events and associated processes that interrupted the regional subsidence, causing contraction/inversion and tilting. The post-break-up depositional history of the mid-Norwegian margin comprises two main stages: (1) middle Eocene–Pliocene margin subsidence and relatively modest sedimentation during a period of climatic decline; and (2) latest Pliocene–Pleistocene full-scale northern hemisphere glaciations that resulted in deep erosion of shelves and hinterlands, and very high sedimentation rates and large-scale continental margin progradation. Slope failures within rapidly deposited glacial sediments affected both prograded margins, releasing large slides that travelled downslope into the oceanic Norway and Lofoten basins. Despite a long exploration history for hydrocarbon prospects in deeper waters and large amounts of data acquisition, no significant discovery has been made.

  The Woodfjorden area of northern Spitsbergen (NW Svalbard) offers access to the world’s northernmost onshore thermal springs, extinct Pleistocene alkali basaltic volcanoes and Miocene flood basalts including extensive hyaloclastites. In July 2023, we undertook a 14-day international multi-disciplinary geoscientific expedition to Woodfjorden-Bockfjorden to investigate the Cenozoic geological evolution of the area. The expedition objectives spanned a wide range of scientific topics from sampling of fluids and gas in the thermal springs to constraining the lithosphere by acquiring magnetotelluric data and sampling volcanic rocks. More specifically, we have 1) conducted gas, fluid and travertine sampling at the thermal springs of Gygrekjelda, Jotunkjeldene and Trollkjeldene, 2) mapped and sampled the Quaternary volcanic centers at Sverrefjellet and Halvdanpiggen, 3) sampled the Miocene basalts of the Seidfjellet Formation along seven profiles plus the underlying Devonian sedimentary rocks, 4) acquired magnetotelluric data at 12 stations along both coasts of Woodfjorden and Bockfjorden and 5) collected extensive digital geological data (digital outcrop models and photospheres) using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs; also known as drones). The collected samples are currently being analyzed for, amongst others, petrology, geochemistry and geochronology. In this contribution, we report on the expedition’s background, scientific objectives and present selected preliminary results such as field parameters from the thermal springs (temperature, pH, electrical conductivity), magnetic susceptibility of volcanic rocks and digital outcrop models plus photospheres.

  ​​​​​​​We held the MagellanPlus workshop SVALCLIME “Deep-time Arctic climate archives: high-resolution coring of Svalbard's sedimentary record”, from 18 to 21 October​​​​​​​ 2022 in Longyearbyen, to discuss scientific drilling of the unique high-resolution climate archives of Neoproterozoic to Paleogene age present in the sedimentary record of Svalbard. Svalbard is globally unique in that it facilitates scientific coring across multiple stratigraphic intervals within a relatively small area. The polar location of Svalbard for some of the Mesozoic and the entire Cenozoic makes sites in Svalbard highly complementary to the more easily accessible mid-latitude sites, allowing for investigation of the polar amplification effect over geological time. The workshop focused on how understanding the geological history of Svalbard can improve our ability to predict future environmental changes, especially at higher latitudes. This topic is highly relevant for the ICDP 2020–2030 Science Plan Theme 4 “Environmental Change” and Theme 1 “Geodynamic Processes”. We concluded that systematic coring of selected Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Paleogene age sediments in the Arctic should provide important new constraints on deep-time climate change events and the evolution of Earth's hydrosphere–atmosphere–biosphere system. We developed a scientific plan to address three main objectives through scientific onshore drilling on Svalbard: a. Investigate the coevolution of life and repeated icehouse–greenhouse climate transitions, likely forced by orbital variations, by coring Neoproterozoic and Paleozoic glacial and interglacial intervals in the Cryogenian (“Snowball/Slushball Earth”) and late Carboniferous to early Permian time periods. b. Assess the impact of Mesozoic Large Igneous Province emplacement on rapid climate change and mass extinctions, including the end-Permian mass extinction, the end-Triassic mass extinction, the Jenkyns Event (Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event), the Jurassic Volgian Carbon Isotopic Excursion and the Cretaceous Weissert Event and Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a. c. Examine the early Eocene hothouse and subsequent transition to a coolhouse world in the Oligocene by coring Paleogene sediments, including records of the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum, the Eocene Thermal Maximum 2, and the Eocene–Oligocene transition. The SVALCLIME science team created plans for a 3-year drilling programme using two platforms: (1) a lightweight coring system for holes of ∼ 100 m length (4–6 sites) and (2) a larger platform that can drill deep holes of up to ∼ 2 km (1–2 sites). In situ wireline log data and fluid samples will be collected in the holes, and core description and sampling will take place at The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) in Longyearbyen. The results from the proposed scientific drilling will be integrated with existing industry and scientific boreholes to establish an almost continuous succession of geological environmental data spanning the Phanerozoic. The results will significantly advance our understanding of how the interplay of internal and external Earth processes are linked with global climate change dynamics, the evolution of life, and mass extinctions.

  The Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) was a global warming event of 5–6 °C around 56 million years ago caused by input of carbon into the ocean and atmosphere. Hydrothermal venting of greenhouse gases produced in contact aureoles surrounding magmatic intrusions in the North Atlantic Igneous Province have been proposed to play a key role in the PETM carbon-cycle perturbation, but the precise timing, magnitude and climatic impact of such venting remains uncertain. Here we present seismic data and the results of a five-borehole transect sampling the crater of a hydrothermal vent complex in the Northeast Atlantic. Stable carbon isotope stratigraphy and dinoflagellate cyst biostratigraphy reveal a negative carbon isotope excursion coincident with the appearance of the index taxon Apectodinium augustum in the vent crater, firmly tying the infill to the PETM. The shape of the crater and stratified sediments suggests large-scale explosive gas release during the initial phase of vent formation followed by rapid, but largely undisturbed, diatomite-rich infill. Moreover, we show that these vents erupted in very shallow water across the North Atlantic Igneous Province, such that volatile emissions would have entered the atmosphere almost directly without oxidation to CO2 and at the onset of the PETM.

  Contourites contribute to the shaping and building of continental margins, and have an economic importance for the offshore-energy sector by acting both as reservoir and seal rock. Here we study the different contourites of the northern North Sea, North Sea Fan and mid-Norwegian margin formed in the Neogene and Quaternary, which are unconventional targets in the region. Based on extensive 3D reflection seismic data combined with borehole data, we suggest that fine-grained drifts form regionally large and thick accumulations, while relatively coarse-grained sediment deposits develop locally. Sourced from the East Shetland Platform and the northern North Sea, the contour currents transported the available sediments northwards, where the regional physiography enhanced the ocean currents and hosted contouritic deposition. The Pliocene to early-Quaternary contourites are characterized by continuously laminated sediments, and most likely contain gas-charged sands in selected locations. Trapped by megaslide escarpments, the late-Quaternary contourites have a transparent facies, most likely representing fine-grained muds. The contourites to the north of the North Sea Fan are further sealed by a bottom-simulating reflection, indicating the presence of a gas-hydrate barrier. Contourites are thus a promising unconventional play model in the region, but caution is required when interpreting the sedimentologic characteristics of these deposits.

  Magnetotelluric (MT) data can image the Earth's electrical resistivity down to the mantle but are rarely used for investigation of offshore rifted margins. In such settings, the lower crust and upper mantle are altered by distinct tectono-thermal processes but often display similar seismic velocities and densities. By integrating resistivity models from MT data, we aim at resolving such ambiguity. Here, 3D inversion of long period, marine MT data (1 – 3000 s) is performed on 104 receivers located along two, ∼300 km long transects in the SW Barents Sea. The resolving power of MT data is assessed with synthetic tests in an archetypal rift system where ample crustal thickness variation occurs. The results highlight that our MT data sense the transition from necking to hyper-extended domain where the crust (<10 km) is not recovered by 3D inversion. In the Bjørnøya Basin – the northernmost member of a hyper-extended Cretaceous basin chain in the NE Atlantic – we combine seismic interpretation and MT inversion models to assign resistivity properties at two depth intervals: (1) 0.1-1 Ωm within Lower Cretaceous marine shales buried at 10-15 km depth (2) 1-10 Ωm within the uppermost mantle. Based on a fluid-rock model, we emphasize that seawater as a sole pore fluid phase is not conductive enough to explain such high bulk conductivities at both intervals. A 25% serpentinization of mantle rocks can account for a fivefold rise in salinity of the residual fluid and is compatible with bulk resistivity, density, and seismic velocities in the Bjørnøya Basin. Such high-salinity fluid can ascend and mix with seawater in pore spaces of the sediments, supporting our model of saline fluid circulation in hyper-extended basins. In conclusion, electrical resistivity models can disambiguate interpretation of deep structures in rifted margin by detecting saline fluids from partial serpentinization, intermixing with seawater in overlying marine sediments.

  Hill-hole pairs are subglacial landforms consisting of thrust-block hills and associated source depressions. Formed by evacuation of material where ice sheets have been locally frozen to the substrate, they give insights into paleo-ice-sheet dynamics. The aim of this study was to document the relationships between ancient hill-hole pairs identified on a buried glacial unconformity with the structure of the underlying sedimentary deposits, and then to determine if the basin geology and glacial fluid migration pathways promoted local subglacial freeze-on during the hill-hole pair formation. The study is based on seismic geomorphological interpretation of four high-resolution 3D seismic cubes covering an area of 800 km2 in the SW Barents Sea, and fluid seepage data from 37 gravity cores. The seismic datasets allowed the identification of 55 hill-hole pairs along the buried unconformity. The hills are characterized by chaotic to homogenous seismic facies forming up to 19 m high mounds, each covering areas of 2000–644,000 m2. The holes form depressions between 1 and 44 m deep and 2000–704,000 m2 in areal extent, which cut into preglacial Mesozoic bedrock and later infilled by glacial till. The holes are often found above fault terminations. High-amplitude reflections identified along the faults and in the strata below the holes are interpreted as shallow gas migrating upward towards the glacial unconformity. Geochemical data of the seabed sediment cores further indicates an association between hill-hole pair occurrence and present-day thermogenic hydrocarbon seepage. The hill-hole pairs geometries were also used to identify five paleo-ice-flow directions along the glacial unconformity. These ice flows exhibit polythermal regimes, and four of them are parallel to ice-stream flow sets interpreted from glacial lineations. The integrated interpretation supports localized fault-related basal freezing of the Barents Sea Ice Sheet which resulted in the formation of hill-hole pairs when the ice sheet moved. In this context, the faults functioned as migration pathways for deep thermogenic fluids, possibly sourced from leaking Jurassic reservoirs. This study highlights the importance of the underlying geology for ice-sheet dynamics: While hill-hole pairs above glacial till appear to be commonly associated with dispersed gas hydrates, hill-hole pairs above bedrock additionally indicate a link to underlying fault systems and hydrocarbon reservoirs. Freeze-on of underlying bedrock to the basal ice along the strike of faults in sedimentary bedrock explains deeper hill-hole pairs with smaller extents along the glacial unconformity compared to areally larger but shallow hill-hole pairs detected above glacial till on modern seabeds. Such close association between paleo-thermogenic gas seepage and the location of hill-hole pairs strongly support that hill-hole pairs are excellent markers revealing exit points of fluid migration pathways in petroleum system models

  The opening of the North Atlantic about 56 My ago was associated with the emplacement of the North Atlantic Igneous Province, including the deposition of voluminous extrusive basaltic successions and intrusion of magma into the surrounding sedimentary basins. The mid-Norwegian Margin is a global type example of such volcanic rifted margins and is well suited for scientific drilling with its thin sediment cover and good data coverage. During International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 396, 21 boreholes were drilled at 10 sites in five different geological settings on this volcanic margin. The boreholes sampled a multitude of igneous and sedimentary settings ranging from lava flow fields to hydrothermal vent complexes, along with thick successions of upper Paleocene and lower Eocene strata. A comprehensive suite of wireline logs was collected in eight boreholes. The main goals of the expedition were to provide constraints for geodynamic models to test different hypotheses that can explain the rapid emplacement of large igneous provinces and the hypothesis that the associated Paleocene/Eocene Thermal Maximum was caused by hydrothermal release of carbon in response to magmatic intrusions. Successful drilling, combined with high core recovery of target intervals of all nine primary sites and one additional alternate site, should allow us to achieve these goals during postcruise work.

  The most prolific reservoir intervals in the Barents Sea are found in the Upper Triassic to Middle Jurassic Realgrunnen Subgroup, deposited during a major change in the structural evolution of the basin which greatly influenced its development and distribution. The effects are evident in one of the petroleum provinces in the SW Barents Sea, the Hoop Area. Due to the condensed nature of the succession, the tectonostratigraphic evolution has been enigmatic. We use a range of different methods and dataset, including high-resolution P-Cable seismic to determine the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the succession. Results are important for exploration and production in the Hoop Area and beyond, but also for a broader understanding of how ultra-condensed successions might evolve during long periods of non-deposition and short bursts of deposition. Seven major phases of deposition and non-deposition/erosion are defined. Stage 1 represents fluvio-deltaic deposition in the Fruholmen Formation (Norian), followed by Stage 2 with significant truncation and non-deposition, lasting up to 35 million years. Deposition resumed with the shallow marine to fluvial Nordmela and Stø formations (Pliensbachian to Bajocian), which both encapsule long periods of erosion and non-deposition (stage 3–6). Stage 7 is represented by transgression and shelf deposition in the Fuglen Formation (Bathonian). The change from a high-accommodation setting with continuous and relatively high rate of accumulation in the Triassic, to a low-accommodation setting with episodic deposition and extensive sediment cannibalization in the Jurassic, resulted in cleaner sandstones with better reservoir properties. The low-accommodation setting also enabled coarse-graded detritus from hinterlands in Fennoscandia to prograde into distal part of the basin and more amalgamation of the sands during the Jurassic. Adversely, the low accommodation setting also caused a fragmented pattern of deposition and preservation that needs to be carefully considered in subsurface datasets, often with limited resolution.

  The renowned Festningen section in the outer part of Isfjorden, western Spitsbergen, offers a c. 7 km-long nearly continuous stratigraphic section of Lower Carboniferous to Cenozoic strata, spanning nearly 300 million years of geological history. Tectonic deformation associated with the Paleogene West-Spitsbergen-Fold-and-Thrust belt tilted the strata to near-vertical, allowing easy access to the section along the shoreline. The Festningen section is a regionally important stratigraphic reference profile, and thus a key locality for any geologist visiting Svalbard. The lithology variations, dinosaur footprints, and the many fossil groups, record more than 300 million years of continental drift, climate change, and sea level variations. In addition, the Festningen section is the only natural geoscientific monument protected by law (i.e. geotope) in Svalbard. In this contribution, we present a digital outcrop model (DOM) of the Festningen section processed from 3762 drone photographs. The resulting high-resolution model offers detail down to 7.01 mm, covers an area of 0.8 km2 and can be freely accessed via the Svalbox database. Through Svalbox, we also put the Festningen model in a regional geological context by comparing it to nearby offshore seismic, exploration boreholes penetrating the same stratigraphy and publications on the deep-time paleoclimate trends recorded at Festningen.

  The P-Cable technology is an acquisition principle for high-resolution and ultra-high-resolution 3D seismic data. Many 3D seismic datasets have been acquired over the last decade, but the application in time-lapse studies for monitoring of CO2 storage is a new and intriguing topic. High-resolution 3D (HR3D) seismic has the potential to detect and monitor CO2 leakage at carbon capture and storage sites with higher accuracy at depths ∼0−2 km below the seafloor compared to more traditional conventional seismic time-lapse data. Here, we synthesize and evaluate research on detection of subsurface CO2 movement using the P-Cable system and address the comparative advantages and disadvantages of conventional and HR3D technologies for subsurface fluid migration monitoring. Studies on P-Cable 4D seismic data show good repeatability (NRMS, 10–40 %), indicating a future monitoring potential. Analysis of detection limits of CO2 data from a CO2 storage site show the ability to detect very small amounts of CO2 (1.3–10.6 t; 3.3–27.4 % gas saturation) in the shallow subsurface. These detection limits are ∼30−300 times smaller than the detection limits of conventional seismic data at similar depths. We conclude that the P-Cable acquisition system can be a valuable monitoring tool in detecting small leakages and can complement conventional seismic data monitoring of the deeper interval.

  Oxygen deprivation and hydrogen sulfide toxicity are considered potent kill mechanisms during the mass extinction just before the Permian–Triassic boundary (~251.9 million years ago). However, the mechanism that drove vast stretches of the ocean to an anoxic state is unclear. Here, we present palaeoredox and phosphorus speciation data for a marine bathymetric transect from Svalbard. This shows that, before the extinction, enhanced weathering driven by Siberian Traps volcanism increased the influx of phosphorus, thus enhancing marine primary productivity and oxygen depletion in proximal shelf settings. However, this non-sulfidic state efficiently sequestered phosphorus in the sediment in association with iron minerals, thus restricting the intensity and spatial extent of oxygen-depleted waters. The collapse of vegetation on land immediately before the marine extinction changed the relative weathering influx of iron and sulfate. The resulting transition to euxinic (sulfidic) conditions led to enhanced remobilization of bioavailable phosphorus, initiating a feedback that caused the spread of anoxic waters across large portions of the shelf. This reconciles a lag of >0.3 million years between the onset of enhanced weathering and the development of widespread, but geographically variable, ocean anoxia, with major implications for extinction selectivity.

  Research on the Permian-Triassic boundary (PTB) along the northern margins of Pangaea (exposed today in the Arctic region) has been heavily reliant on field observations, where data resolution was consequently determined by outcrop condition and accessibility. Core drilling in central Spitsbergen allowed for a near-complete recovery of two ~90 m cores through the PTB. Analyses of the core and nearby outcrops include stratigraphic logging and sampling, XRF scanning, petrography, biostratigraphy, isotope geochemistry, and geochronology. The First Appearance Datum (FAD) of H. parvus in Svalbard places the base of the Triassic ca. 4 m above the base of the Vikinghøgda Formation, and ca. 2.50 m above the End-Permian Mass Extinction (EPME) and its associated sharp negative δ13C. The PTB therefore falls within the Reduviasporonites chalastus Assemblage Zone in Svalbard. Precise U-Pb TIMS dating of two zircon crystals in a tephra layer just above the first documented Hindeodus parvus in Svalbard gives an age of 252.13 ± 0.62 Ma. High-resolution palaeoenvironmental proxies, including Si/kcps (kilo counts per second), Zr/Rb, K/Ti, Fe/K, and V/Cr, indicate a transition towards a more arid climate in the earliest Triassic, contemporaneous with prolonged bottom-water dysoxic/anoxic conditions, following an increase in volcanic activity in the Late Permian. Statistical analysis of Zr/Rb, K/Ti and V/Cr elemental ratios suggests that the system was impacted by long-eccentricity (400 kyr) cyclicity. The δ13C excursion in organic carbon (δ13Corg) record signals a large negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE) associated with the mass extinction event, but also records a second, smaller negative CIE ca. 22 m above this interval. This younger δ13Corg excursion correlates to similar CIEs in the Dienerian (late Induan) records of other sections, notably in the Tethys Ocean, which have been interpreted as recording a small biotic crisis during the post-extinction recovery. Evidence of this negative CIE in Spitsbergen suggests that the Dienerian crisis may have been global in extent. The negative δ13Corg values are associated with evidence for dysoxia or anoxia in the core, and the occurrence of tephra layers in the same interval suggests a possible connection between the Dienerian crisis and a discrete episode of volcanic activity.

  Late Cretaceous‐Cenozoic contractional structures are widespread in the Barents Sea. While the exact dating of the deformation is unclear, it can only be inferred that the contraction is younger than the early Cretaceous. One likely contractional mechanism is related to Greenland Plate kinematics at Paleogene times. We use a thin sheet finite element modeling approach to compute deformation within the Barents Sea in response to the Greenland‐Eurasia relative motions during the Paleogene. The analytical solution for the 3‐D folding of sediments above basement faults is used to assess possibilities for folding. Two existing Greenland Plate kinematic models, differing slightly in the timing, magnitude, and direction of motion, are tested. Results show that the Greenland Plate's general northward motion promotes growing anticlines in the entire Barents Sea shelf. Our numerical models suggest that the fan‐shaped pattern of cylindrical anticlines in the Barents Sea can be associated with the Eurekan deformation concurrent to the initial rifting and early seafloor spreading in the northeast Atlantic. The main contraction phase in the SW Barents Sea coincides with the timing of continental breakup, whereas the peak of deformation predicted for the NW Barents Sea occurred at later times. Svalbard has experienced a prolonged period of compressional deformation.   Transform margins represent strike-slip type of plate boundaries that form during continental breakup and initial ocean opening. They are often characterized by margin-parallel highs with exposed pre- and syn-rift sequences. The Vøring Transform Margin, offshore mid-Norway, initiated in the earliest Eocene during the opening of the NE Atlantic. Here, 2D seismic reflection data reveal a transform margin high, the Mímir High. The western flank of this undrilled structure is a kilometer-high escarpment where seismic reflections of pre-breakup age are truncated at the seafloor. The aim of this study was to recover seabed rock samples from the outcropping or shallowly buried sedimentary sequences to provide a geological tie to the regional seismic framework, thereby constraining the basin history and tectono-stratigraphic development. Seabed samples were successfully collected from 14 gravity core and Selcore stations and 10 ROV (remotely operated vehicle) sites along a 750 m high sampling profile, recovering clay, shales, sandstones and glacial dropstones. Biostratigraphy results revealed that the ages of the sedimentary rocks follow the stratigraphic order predicted by the initial seismic interpretation, with Upper Cretaceous sediments at the base and lower Eocene sediments at the top. The integrated interpretation shows that the Mímir High area, including parts of the outer Vøring and Møre basins and the proto-Jan Mayen Microplate Complex, were characterized by the deposition of late Campanian to early Maastrichtian, near coastal and shale-dominated sequences with poor source rock qualities. The early Paleocene samples indicate deep marine conditions that abruptly ended by rapid uplift of the Mímir High in the earliest Eocene. Finally, a reworked Pliensbachian palynomorph assemblage in potential early Eocene strata indicate the presence of exposed Mesozoic sequences in the vicinity of the Mímir High. We argue that some of the lower Eocene sediments where deposited within a hypothetical drainage system sourced from Greenland (Traill Ø or Jameson Land) and/or from the Jan Mayen Ridge prior to continental separation, and not the result of recent ice-rafting.

  The Mjølnir structure, SW Barents Sea, is one of the best-preserved marine impact craters on Earth. After impact on the paleo-seafloor about 142 Ma ago, this crater experienced an atypical deformation of its central peak, which is now elevated ~435 m above the crater rims. Here, we investigate the effect of far-field tectonic stresses on the central peak uplift based on interpretation of new high-resolution P-Cable and conventional seismic reflection data. Nearby wells provided stratigraphic control on the interpreted horizons. The reconstruction of the crater sedimentary infill supports a subdued original central peak relief with a 5 km-wide, gentle mound ~15 m below the rim. Our interpretation shows that subvertical, outward-dipping, impact-induced faults were reactivated by uplifted segments of the central peak up to 500 m above the platform level during one or several contractional episodes. We postulate that post-Albian tectonic compressional events triggered the structural uplift of the Mjølnir central peak. Differential compaction, previously seen as the main deformation process, may have increased the original central peak height by only ~10 m. The mobilization of impact-shattered rocks by tectonic compression provides a new and robust explanation for the structural rise of Mjølnir's central peak.

  High-resolution 3D site characterization can deliver reliable quantitative property volumes of the subsurface when based on seismic data able to image meter-sized objects. Following the theoretical analysis of seismic wave propagation in the shallow sub-surface, we present case studies based on re-processing of 3D P-Cable seismic data. The case study of data re-processing from the Vestnesa Ridge west of Svalbard and the outer Vøring Basin show that P-Cable 2.5D and 3D data can provide decimeter- to meter-scale vertical resolution of the shallow subsurface. Collection of new 3D P-Cable data with optimized acquisition parameters will provide meter-scale horizontal and vertical resolution. Therefore, 3D seismic volumes will represent the framework for data interpretation, integration and inversion where in situ measurements can be propagated with minimal data interpolation.

  Regional Early Cretaceous uplift of the northern Barents Sea associated with the High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP) caused the development of the fluvial to open-marine depositional system, terminating in the southwestern Barents Sea. This study has established a new temporal and spatial evolution of the Lower Cretaceous deposits in the Hoop area, in particular the location and age of the intrashelf platform lobe front and subsequent block-faulting. A composite high-resolution 3D and 2.5D P-Cable and conventional 3D seismic dataset image the strata and cross-cutting faults in the Hoop area. The P-Cable data typically have a resolution of 3–7 m in the shallow subsurface, up to four times better than the conventional seismic data, contributing to a new and better mapping hence understanding of the Lower Cretaceous strata and faults. Seismic horizon and facies mapping reveal large-scale clinoforms, with present-day heights of 150–200 m and dips of 0.65–1.13°. The highresolution data furthermore display complex stratigraphic and structural features, such as small-scale clinoforms and numerous faults. The shelf platform succession is block-faulted, and the main Early Cretaceous fault activity thus postdates the arrival of the delta and platform sediments from the northwest. Detailed seismo-stratigraphic ties to the 7324/2–1 (Apollo) and 7325/1–1 (Atlantis) wells, and ties to the adjacent Fingerdjupet Subbasin, document a Barremian age for the shelf platform deposits and an Aptian?–early Albian age for the main faulting event. The faulting was likely initiated in the Aptian, but a hiatus or condensed section above the Barremian strata makes it difficult to constrain the onset of deformation in the Hoop area.

We report the first high precision U-Pb zircon geochronology from two alkaline ultramafic-felsic layered intrusive complexes from Taimyr, showing synchronicity between these and the main Siberian Traps (sub)volcanic pulse, and the presence of a second Dinerian-Smithian pulse. This is the first documentation of felsic intrusive magmatism occurring during the main pulse, testifying to the Siberian Trap’s compositional diversity. Furthermore, the intrusions cut basal basalts of the Taimyr lava stratigraphy hence providing a minimum age of these basalts of 251.64 ± 0.11 Ma. Synchronicity of (sub)volcanic activity between Taimyr and the Siberian Traps imply that the total area of the Siberian Traps main pulse should include a ~300 000 km2 area north of Norilsk. The vast aerial extent of the (sub)volcanic activity during the Siberian Traps main pulse may explain the severe environmental consequences.

  The northeast Atlantic encompasses archetypal examples of volcanic rifted margins. Twenty-five years after the last ODP (Ocean Drilling Program) leg on these volcanic margins, the reasons for excess melting are still disputed with at least three competing hypotheses being discussed. We are proposing a new drilling campaign that will constrain the timing, rates of volcanism, and vertical movements of rifted margins. This will allow us to parameterise geodynamic models that can distinguish between the hypotheses. Furthermore, the drilling-derived data will help us to understand the role of breakup magmatism as a potential driver for the Palaeocene–Eocene thermal maximum (PETM) and its influence on the oceanographic circulation in the earliest phase of the northeast Atlantic Ocean formation. Tackling these questions with a new drilling campaign in the northeast Atlantic region will advance our understanding of the long-term interactions between tectonics, volcanism, oceanography, and climate and the functioning of subpolar northern ecosystems and climate during intervals of extreme warmth.

These include a >1000 km long dyke complex preserved in the Särv, Seve and Corrovarre nappes (Andréasson et al., 1998; Hollocher et al., 2007; Tegner et al., 2019) and dykes of the Seiland Igneous Province preserved in the Kalak nappe (Robins and Takla, 1979; Reginiussen et al., 1995). The compositions of the >1000 km long dyke complex is mainly tholeiitic and displays lateral geochemical zonation from enriched to depleted basaltic compositions from south to north. In addition, the central part of this dyke complex (in Trøndelag, Norway and Jämtland, Sweden) displays alkali basalt compositions. In contrast, the dykes of the Seiland Igneous Province are entirely composed of alkali basalts including ankaramite, picrite and lamprophyres.   Trough mouth fans are major submarine depocentres that form in front of ice streams that advance onto the continental shelf. They provide extensive records of past glaciations and ice sheet dynamics, and understanding their deposits and sedimentary processes is key when interpreting glaciated margins. In this study, we use high-quality 3D reflection seismic data with a vertical resolution of 2 m and a bin size of 6.25 x 18.75 m extending over 14000 km2 at the uppermost North Sea Fan. The aim is to document the seismic stratigraphy, sedimentary processes and glacio-marine landforms shaped during different paleo-geographical configurations prevailing since Marine Isotope Stage 6 (last 130 ka). Using facies analyses and seismic geomorphology the sequence is subdivided into eight seismic units (U1-8), separated by high-amplitude continuous reflections. The uppermost stratigraphy of the fan is characterized by >400 m of prograding strata, spanning from the top of the Tampen Slide at its deepest to the seabed on the more shallow shelf, accounting to 7160 km3 of sediments. The lowermost two units, U1 and U2, are characterized by continuous reflections with increasing amplitude contrasts near the Tampen Slide headwall. U1 is a tabular body and covers the entire study area, while U2 is lenticular and limited to the northern part, confined by a secondary headwall.   Trough mouth fans are important depocenters for glacial sedimentation in high latitude margins,recording sedimentological processes and their relationship with paleoclimatic fluctuations onshort timescales - from decades to millennia. The volume of sediments accumulated in these fansvaries significantly depending on the phase of the glacial cycle, with higher values typically reachedduring early retreats. The input of large volumes during short time intervals can potentially triggersubmarine landslides and overpressure build-up, making the understanding of processes andproportions related to sedimentation in glaciated margins crucial, especially during periods ofglobal warming. In this study we use high-quality 3D seismic cubes (vertical resolution of 2 m andbin size of 6.25 x 18.75 m) to delimitate different types of deposits on an area over 14000 km2 onthe North Sea Trough Mouth Fan during a full glacial-interglacial cycle of the last glaciation(Weichselian). After mapping the corresponding top and base surfaces of each type of deposittheir volumes were calculated using the mean thickness of the beds multiplied by their extent. Thebase of the studied package comprises a contourite body deposited on top of the Tampen Slide,whose failure is estimated to have happened around 130 ka ago. Next we have a thick (> 400 m)mixed package of debris flows and meltwater turbidites, with its rapid deposition happeningduring approximately 4 ka (~23 to 19 ka). The package is then completed with plume settlingrelated to the full retreat of the ice stream. Although not completely interpreted due to limitationsof the dataset extent and remobilization of a part of the fan by the Storegga Slide in the northernpart, the last glacial cycle comprises a total of 7160 km3 of sediments, with more than half of it(4850 km3) originated from the downslope processes. The plumites and contourites comprisevolumes of 1105 km3 and 1205 km3. This accounts to a significant variability of the magnitude ofsediment volume coming into the sink per year, with the downslope deposits having over 100times more sediment input and the plumites 5 times more when compared to thecontourites. These results highlight the range of sediment volume that can be delivered in aglaciated margin depending on changes in processes and climatic fluctuations, which may also entail changes in the potential geohazards.

  Trough mouth fans comprise the largest sediment deposits along glaciated margins, and record Pleistocene climate changes on a multi-decadal time scale. Sedimentation related to climate warming in polar regions and new challenges associated with the energy transition highlight the urge for better knowledge of these depocenters. Here, we present sedimentation models for the two largest of these depocenters-the Bear Island Fan on the western Barents Sea margin and the North Sea Fan on the northern North Sea margin-which are analogues for large glacial fans along the Antarctic and Greenland margins. We use extensive high-quality 3D reflection seismic cubes (37,200 km 2) as well as conventional 2D reflection seismic lines, and combine these datasets with lithological and geophysical borehole logs. The stratigraphy of trough mouth fans is dominated by contourites, glacigenic debris flows, meltwater turbidites, and megaslides, which together result in a thickness exceeding 2 km. Neogene to early Quaternary-age contourites are characterized by continuous and high-amplitude reflections in the seismic data. The contourites of the late Quaternary, in contrast, have a more transparent seismic facies, and onlap the escarpments shaped by the megaslides. The lithology of the contourites varies from fine clays to coarse sands. Meltwater turbidites are identified as high-amplitude reflections characterized by 4-100 m deep channels and sourced from multiple regions along the paleo-shelf break. The well-connected turbidite channels are 90-2100 m wide, and can be traced for distances of >100 km. These channels are both deeper and wider in the North Sea Fan compared to the Bear Island Fan. The lithology of these deposits has yet to be cored. Glacigenic debris flows are transparent packages of sediments, with a lens-shaped expression in the seismic profiles and lobe-shaped geomorphology in planar view. The grain size of glacigenic debris flows is typically more mud-dominated than for contourites, but glacigenic debris flows do include sandy beds at selected intervals. Glacigenic debris flows are more dominant in the high-latitude Bear Island Fan compared to the mid-latitude North Sea Fan. Megaslides consist of high-amplitude, deformed sediment that is constrained by steep headwalls and sidewalls. The megaslides within these two trough mouth fans have mainly occurred since the Late Pleistocene and fail along contouritic basal layers.

  The opening of the Norwegian-Greenland Sea during the Paleogene was accompanied by episodic, but extensive and voluminous magmatism along the rift margin. The NE Atlantic conjugate margins now consists of volcanic products such as flood basalt deposits, igneous sill intrusions and other volcanogenic sediments. Periods of increased magmatic activity during the Paleogene appears to coincide with environmental perturbations such as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), and several studies both onshore and offshore reveal a spatial relationship between igneous sills and vent structures known as hydrothermal vent complexes (HTVCs). HTVCs are conduits formed in response to contact metamorphism of organic-rich sedimentary strata in the sill aureole, leading to the generation of hydrothermal gases and fluids that are eventually released at the paleo-seafloor. The spatiotemporal relationship between sills, vents and global warming events have led researchers to suggest that hydrothermal venting of thermogenic gas may have contributed to the increased temperatures and warmer climate represented by e.g., the PETM. Being the most significant global warming event of the Cenozoic, the exact mechanism driving the PETM must be better constrained. To understand the link between magmatism and periods of global warming, we are analyzing the distribution of extrusive/intrusive magmatic products and the relationship between igneous sills and HTVCs on the Møre and Vøring volcanic margins, offshore Norway.   Understanding the sedimentary processes and resulting deposits along glaciated margins, that can be recorded in trough mouth fans (TMF), is crucial to increase knowledge about ice sheet dynamics. Their behavior influences Earth’s climate system and sea level variations, from regional to global scale, during relatively rapid timescales (up to millennia). This study uses high-quality 3D seismic reflection data of the uppermost North Sea Trough Mouth Fan to document the seismic stratigraphy, sedimentary processes and glacio-marine landforms shaped during the last glacial highstand (23-19 ka). The stratigraphy of the fan is characterized by thick (~400m) prograding sequences. Facies analyses and seismic geomorphology show three main depositional processes (contour-currents, gravity-driven flows and setting of plumes), mappable as seven seismic sub-units in the studied interval. Contour currents are responsible for the deposition of the lowermost two sub-units (U1 and U2), characterized by continuous reflections with increasing amplitude contrasts near the Tampen Slide escarpment. U1 is dominated by positive amplitudes with mostly tabular geometry. U2, identified in the northern part, is dominated by negative amplitudes with lenticular geometry and is synchronous with the glaciation onset. These sub-units are followed by a succession of relatively homogeneous facies interrupted by continuous high-frequency horizons that subdivide the succession into four sub-units (U3-6). These sub-units are characterized by channels, presumably generated by meltwater-fed turbidity flows, varying in width, varying in depth from 10 to 60m and with suggesting high-energy episodes that creates channels deeper than 100m. They are pervasive throughout the sequences and across the fan and are commonly isolated with low sinuosity. The uppermost sequence (U7) is dominated by deposition of the suspended load and ice-raft debris, characterized by parallel and slightly undulated continuous inner reflections, thinning out downslope. Along the shelf, multiple cross-cutting of iceberg scours and pits are observed. The succession with channels evidence that meltwater can play a major role in TMF sedimentation. These new insights about the smaller-scale processes within seismic resolution demonstrate the variability of active processes during a fast sedimentation period of the Weichselian Glaciation at the North Sea Trough Mouth Fan.

  The most dramatic mass extinction the Earth has ever experienced occurred 252 million years ago, at the end of the Permian. It was likely triggered by the volcanic eruptions and magmatic intrusions associated with the Siberian Traps Large Igneous Province (LIP), leading to dramatic climatic changes, with consequences lasting well into the Early Triassic. Here, we present a summary of the findings from the study of several sedimentary successions distributed across the Barents Sea that spanned the End Permian Mass Extinction (EPME) and the Permian-Triassic boundary. The four studied successions included the renowned Festningen section in the outer part of Isfjorden, western Spitsbergen; the DD-1 core and the associated river section in Deltadalen, central Spitsbergen; a core drilled offshore Kvitøya in northern Svalbard, and a core drilled on the Horda Platform in the Barents Sea. Datasets of various research lines were collected from these sections including sedimentology, organic geochemistry, isotope, geochronology, XRF, mineralogy, ichnology, palaeontology, palynology and digital outcrop data. Historically, the Permian-Triassic boundary exposed today in Svalbard (and at various places across the High Arctic regions) was placed at the very prominent and abrupt facies change occurring between the siliceous mudstones or spiculites of the Kapp Starostin Formation, and the overlying soft, non-siliceous mudstones and siltstones of the Vardebukta and Vikinghøgda formations. The abruptness of this facies change, which also marks the demise of sponges, led to the belief that it represented a hiatus or a gap of several million years, with the uppermost Permian strata missing from the sedimentary record, while the mudstones of the Vardebukta and Vikinghøgda formations were definitely of Lower Triassic age, based on ammonoid biostratigraphy. Hindeodus parvus, the conodont that defines the base of the Triassic, was for the first time identified in Svalbard a few meters above the lithostratigraphic boundary, which is therefore of Upper Permian age. Additionally, our new data show that sedimentation was continuous across this lithostratigraphic boundary. This transition from the Kapp Starostin Formation to the Vardebukta and Vikinghøgda formations was accompanied by a major reorganisation/inversion of the basin(s), but its exact nature remains puzzling. Further, all measured sections record the EPME, which is associated with a 6-8 ‰ δ13CVPDB negative excursion, and measured between the lithostratigraphic and the Permian-Triassic boundaries. These negative isotopic excursions are found in close vicinity to several tephra layers that have been precisely dated at 252.13 ± 0.62 Ma, strongly suggesting a connection to the Siberian Traps LIP event. The mass extinction is also confirmed by the very rapid decreasing of trace fossil abundance and diversity, as anoxia spread across the water from proximal and shallow water to deeper settings. Geochemical and ichnological data indicate the occurrence of several anoxic pulses, intersected by very brief episodes of improved oxygenation levels. It took ca. 145 Kyr for life to recover after the extinction event, based on sedimentation rate calculations. Data also suggest that a shift towards more arid climatic conditions and increased eutrophication on land accompanied the EPME.

  The origin of Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) associated with continental breakup and the reconstruction of continents older than c. 320 million years (pre-Pangea) are contentious research problems. Here we study the petrology of a 615 - 590 Myr dolerite dyke complex that intruded rift-basins of the magma-rich margin of Baltica and now is exposed in the Scandinavian Caledonides. These dykes are part of the Central Iapetus Magmatic Province (CIMP), a LIP emplaced in Baltica and Laurentia during opening of the Caledonian Wilson Cycle. The >1000 km long dyke complex displays lateral geochemical zonation from enriched to depleted basaltic compositions from south to north. Geochemical modelling of major and trace elements shows these compositions are best explained by melting hot mantle 75-250°C above ambient mantle. Although the trace element modelling solutions are non-unique, the best explanation involves melting a laterally zoned mantle plume with enriched and depleted peridotite lithologies, similar to present-day Iceland and to the North Atlantic Igneous Province. The origin of CIMP appears to have involved several mantle plumes. This is best explained if rifting and breakup magmatism coincided with plume generation zones at the margins of a Large Low Shear-wave Velocity Province (LLSVP) at the core mantle boundary. If the LLSVPs are quasi-stationary back in time as suggested in recent geodynamic models, the CIMP provides a guide for reconstructing the paleogeography of Baltica and Laurentia 615 million years ago to the LLSVP now positioned under the Pacific Ocean. Our results provide a stimulus for using LIPs as piercing points for plate reconstructions.

  The early Cenozoic was a key period in Earth history. The opening of the northeast Atlantic ocean coincided with both the formation of the North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP) and the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), suggesting that there may be a causal relationship between them. We present two drilling projects that will start next year on the Norwegian margin (IODP 396) and in northwest Denmark (ICDP Limfjorden) to address these exciting research questions.

  Resolution and illumination issues in seismic data curtails identification of fault geometries and fault-initiated rock damage when mapping subsurface faults. Seismic modelling can be utilized to bridge the gap in identifying what can be imaged with certainty in seismic data, with respect to the original geology, especially when also comparing to outcrop data. In this study, we explore how seismic modelling can distinguish between real structures versus seismic artefacts. 2(3)D Point-Spread-Function based convolution modelling is used in a sensitivity study. One input is detailed fault interpretations of high-resolution P-Cable data and comparable conventional 3D seismic data from the Hoop area in the Barents Sea. Another dataset comes from detailed fault geometries observed in outcrops, which were used to build geological models as input to the seismic modelling. In addition to the host-rock lithofacies, parameters of importance for the geological model building include overall fault geometry and the distribution of architectural elements (fault facies) within the fault zone. By varying fault input, lithofacies, a wide range of frequencies, and illumination, we analyse a variety of synthetic seismic images. Finally we compare our modelled outcomes with seismic data from the Hoop area. The scope of the workflow is to increase confidence in seismic interpretations and to identify limitations in the analysis of steep, normal faults in seismic data.
