My research investigates deformation processes of Earth materials to better understand rock rheology, lithosphere strength and strain localization along major faults and plate boundaries. I investigate the brittle deformation and the viscous flow of solid rocks in the Earth’s deep interior, which fundamentally controls a variety of large-scale processes ranging from the formation of tectonic plate boundaries to the dynamics of the deepest portions of earthquake-generating faults. The relationships between fluid flow in the lithosphere, mineral reactions, partial melting and deformation represent a core theme of my current research. My research is field-based and has brought me to spectacular places, such as Lofoten in Norway, the Alps, and the desert of Western Australia. I make extensive use of quantitative micro-analytical techniques, and particularly of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD).
